What kind of gun does Barney Fife use?

A funny question, but what kind of gun does he keep using to almost shoot a hole in his foot? For those of you who have lived in a cave for the past half century, Barney Fife played on the Andy Griffith show.

I always thought it was a Smith&Wesson model 10, but I am not positive.

Could of swore I saw him place a 38 round in the chamber. Must have strong fingers, thats a tight fit in a K-22.

I thought the same thing. Maybe Andy did that intentionally so Barney wouldn't shoot his foot off.

Wouldn't that be a great poster? One of the classic images of Barney, with the caption "Beware the man who carries only one cartridge. . . . "

Yep,as much as I hate to admit it my wife watches that show all the time. In the few scenes where Barney (or Andy for that matter) are cleaning their guns you can clearly see that they`re Colts mainly bacause of the Colt cyl. latches. I believe the same guns were used for other scenes too because I`ve noted that they pull the cylinder release to open the cyl. rather than pushing it S&W style. Marcus

Dangit..now I'm going to have to watch Barney to see what type of gun he carries. Either that or I can stake out the local Crispy Creme.

Good Shooting

You know, guys, this wasn't real life.

It was a television show filmed over several seasons.

It's VERY likely that the gun changed on a random basis, as the firearm was returned to the props department/rental company and then obtained for the next filming season.

In other words, I would not be at all surprised to find out that Barney carried BOTH Colt and S&W revolvers, and different models at different times.

...tactical god that he was, he'd know to use the right tool for the job.

Do you think his grandson, Deputy Fife III, on the Mayberry SD SRT is only allowed to carry one bullet in his MP5?

Didnt they let Barney carry a Thompson in one episode to watch out for some escaped convicts? I believe so...

Barney's gun is a Colt O.P.

Barney Fife's revolver is a 4" Colt Official Police. I have read it in several Q&A's columns in various gun magazines over the years. I also have a Don Knott's autograph on a large framed black and white photo studio print with his gun out of the holster. No doubt about it, it is a Colt Official Police model.

I thought it was a Desert Eagle 50AE.
Maybe I wasn't looking close enough.
