After checking the headspace on a .300 h&h, I have only one problem. Everything seem normal but the rifle only fires once out of ten trys.
the firing pin is very straight and of the right length, even tried new spring and the result are still the same.

what could be wrong?

What year model animal is this? Any possibility of dirt inside the bolt?

While the firing pin might be of the right length, dirt (or rust) can keep it from protruding through the face of the bolt far enough for reliable ignition of the primer. You obviously know how to disassemble the bolt--did you do any cleaning, inside it?

The struck, but unignited primers: How deep is the indentation? If it looks normal, maybe you just have bad ammo.

If the gun checks out, the ammo is at fault...

Get a box of fresh factory ammo and give it a try.

Are you certain the gun was not rechambered?

Pepe, without the rifle to inspect that's a tough one. The one thing that comes to mind is maybe a burr at the firing pin hole is stopping the pin from it's full travel. You might ream it or drill it with the next size up wire gage bit and see if that helps. George

if I push the firing pin with my finger and without the spring it comes out the front of the bolt about 1/16 . the firing pin holes on the brass that were shot are very deep. maybe a problem with headspace?

A lot of old 300 H&H's were rechambered to 300 Weatherby. You may want to check the chamber.

Looking at the Speer #13, for size comparisons from the back of the cartridge case to the front of the belt:

.300 H&H = 0.2200.
.300 Wby = 0.2190.

There should be no "looseness" problem if the H&H was rechambered to Weatherby. A fired H&H case would obviously look very strange!

Bad ammo?
