I Love Finding A Used Gem
![]() Found this used, but very nice, Ruger Speed Six at my local gun shop for a really fair price and snagged it.

.38special or .357?
Is it a square butt, or round? They are great service Revolvers, I've always admired them. Good find. |

I picked up a blued Service Six 3” last year, but unfortunately health issues kept me from shooting it yet, I also picked up a very lightly used 4” stainless Python I haven’t shot yet. But all this will be taken care of this summer now that I’m healthy again.

nice
Nice find, and what appears to be a genuine Tyler T-grip to boot! Was that present when purchased, or have you added it since? The T-grip alone, especially if period, might be valued at $30-40 bucks.
Both the gun and grip adapter are a find! |

I like my speed sixes. Trigger leaves a bit to be desired, but I can still shoot them well.
Have one on my night stand if that says anything.

Congratulations, thats a very nice find. The Speed Sixes are getting harder and harder to find, especially in that condition. I have its close cousin, A 1980 2-3/4" Security Six that I found about 16 years ago unfired with box and papers. I was fortunate and found a period correct Tyler T Grip a few weeks later, made by Melvin Tyler with the original box and it's been on there ever since.

Those old Rugers are sweet guns, especially the short barrel ones.
I have two older Smiths, a 2-1/2” 66 and a 686. Both have Tyler polished grip adapters. Bought them new many years ago, kinda funny, my wife was really impressed with the little boxes they came in, quality. |

Those are great guns, I sold one last year and have regretted it ever since. I didn't need it, I have to many guns now, but it was a neat revolver. I took it on a trade, shoulda kept it, hell they don't eat much LOL

I had the Security 6 with adjustable sights with the same barrel length. I bought it used in 1985 for around $200. One of those I wish I'd kept.

based on what I can see in the picture, its not a Speed Six, it's a Service Six.
The gun should be marked, on the right side, on the frame just below the cylinder. The Security Six had adjustable sights, the Service Six had fixed sights, both had a square butt, the Speed Six was the Service Six with a round butt configuration. The gun in the picture does have an uncommon feature, the Tyler T grip adapter was seldom seen on Rugers, but quite commonly applied to S&Ws by the users.

Service Six was round butt with adjustable sights if I remember correctly. Security six was square butt and mostly seen with adjustable sights, but occasionally found with fixed sights. Just going by memory on the last two so your mileage may vary.

You're slightly off, the Security Six had adjustable sights, a square butt and was offered in barrel lengths up to 6".
The Service Six was the Security Six with the only difference being fixed sights and only being offered with a 4" as the longest barrel. The Speed Six was the Service Six with a round butt. Still waiting to hear from the OP what the gun says on it. My money is on Service Six.

I have a Service -Six that belonged to my Father, 2 3/4 stainless Bi-Centennial. He looked everywhere for a Speed-Six but couldn't find one so he turned it into a round butt. I own several others in the series and have always had one or two since the early 70's. The one that eluded me was the 2/34 Security-Six.
Great find, they are getting scarce in really nice condition. |

According to Wikipedia, the Speed Six was chambered in .38 S&W.
Wow. Had no idea. Must have been intended for maybe a Royal Hong Kong Police contract?

I've seen Service Six, and Speed Six in .380 Revolver cartridge, our 38 S&W, for sale on the web auction sights. Who ordered them, I have no idea. Hong Kong bought S&W model 10s in 38 Special.
Both of them, as well as Sercurity Six we're made in 9mmx 19 also, I assume for Israeli contracts. They were cataloged for sale in the Shooters Bible in 1978. |

The Service Six in " .380 Rim" was produced in the mid-1980s for India. Over runs were shipped to UK, NI, NZ, Oz, Jordan and Israel. Sights were set up for the 178-grain .380 Mk2z.....
Mine in attached photo was an employee sale. A few hundred also went to commercial civilian export sale. Round-butt Speed Six in this caliber are less common, but are occasionally seen. Last edited by Outpost75; May 14, 2025 at 04:44 PM. |

Outpost75, thanks for the info.
In the late 80s, I bought/traded for a Speed Six, 4in, in 38 Special. Nice gun, I found a T-grip for it. If I remember correctly, it fit in a holster for a Colt Official Police 4in. Eventually traded it off for a Model 28 S&W. Probably should have kept it. |

I teally like the T-grip adapter. I have one on a .45 Colt Redhawk and on various Smith & Wesson revolvers.
Nice gun. |

Nice. Thanks, Outpost. That makes sense. I figured they had to go somewhere in the Empire, but never thought of India.
