Hornady "Aeromatch"

So Hornady released a new line of bullets they are calling "Aeromatch". They are describing them as "match proven bullet profiles that shooters love". They also come in 500rnd boxes to keep your lots more similar. They apparently have matched the profile and weight to the degree they are stating you can use the original manufacturers load data with their aeromatch bullets.

So far I have seen copies of the .224 69 and 77g SMK, .243 105g Berger and possibly the .308 168 and 175g SMK as well.

I am kind of interested, but prices seem pretty close to the factory prices, maybe 3-5 cents cheaper per bullet. And I am not sure exactly how I feel about them directly taking profiles developed by other manufacturers.

What do guys think?

If there's a patent, it depends on the design's age. Patents last 20 years if they aren't added to. After that, anyone is free to have a go at it. As a principle of anti-trust law, this is so the consumer has competitors to choose from, and nobody can corner the market on a product indefinitely.

I guess this is the same as the Korean auto manufacturers stealing everyone else's car designs. They can do it, but to me it's more an acknowledgement that your competitors bullets are better than yours.

I hope this helps Sierra sell a lot of bullets.

Still, it's weird since H has a lot of good designs of their own....

I just picked up a box of 500. I have spent a lot of time prepping brass and getting ready for a 77 grain bullet shootout.

SMK
CC
MidSouth Shooter Supply Classic Match
Aeromatch
Lapua Scenar
Berger OTM
Barnes MatchBurner

These are about to be tested vs each other using 4-5 good loads with different powders

stagpanther,

Would you buy an expensive seating die to seat only one bullet?

I didn't, no matter how much I like accuracy.

Short answer--if it's a unicorn bullet--yes. But truly "magic bullets" are few and far between; a super-model bullet does not in and of itself guarantee accuracy. I bought quite a few of those a-tips when hornady first rolled them out, I never could find the right sweet spot for them that could easily and predictably beat their own excellent eld's; but that could be simply my cartridge formulas just didn't find the holy grail.
