.350 Legend AR

Thinking about putting together a .350 Legend in a AR, Any good advice going forward? By the way have 90% of the AR parts already. Thanks!

Make it a 450 Bushmaster and you got something.

If it is because you are in a restricted state for hunting and the .350L is legal, then sure. Otherwise, not worth the time, money and effort IMHO.

A good round for pigs at 150 yards or less , hits hard without a lot of recoil or muzzle blast , as that was what it was originally developed to do . I just got a 120 ish pig at 125 yards Sat night . My friends and I have been using that round with good measure on pigs for about 6 years now .

Ain’t a “legend” yet.

Legend was just the name Winchester gave to the cartridge when they picked it up . The Original name was .357 Bandit , one of the line of straight wall rifle cartridges I had been making for about 20 years .

185 solids with Lil Gun at moderate (pistol speeds) velocities worked well out of my .450s.

I stayed away from the 350, odd cartridge. Specs show it takes .357 bullets, but you cant use them in all practicality due to the throat length and brass thickness. It actually uses proprietary .355 bullets, although I have seen some 9mm bullets repurposed for it. However the 9mm bullets may not play nice at 350 legend velocities. That's as far into the weeds as I got before I decided to leave it alone. But that is coming at it from the perspective of someone who wont shoot a gun he cant reload for (22lr and 12ga excluded)

450 made a lot more sense to me. But I still have not gone there. I just did not like the idea of it head spacing on the mouth with that much recoil and not being able to put a roll crimp on it.

I have both -- each in bolt and AR.

The Legend easily takes 357 Cast, and 356 jacketed
(I just size down the Speer 180 HotCor... no big deal.)

Yes, you do have to watch case length.

As far as crimp... 1/2 turn of a Lee FCD
(the only FCD I use)

Each cartridge has its place.

Stab crimps are not difficult, and solve that problem. I actually had a dual stab crimp for my .450 Corvette loads (longer gas system, longer throat, more pressure) made from Lee FC Dies that were machined.

I sold the .350L and the .450BM ARs along with the dies, components and such a few years ago. .35Rem beats both for me.

I got an AR in 335AR Max just before the 350L was introduced. Same ballistics. For a while, I followed a Facebook group specific to the 350L. Tons of real experience has been shared and is available if you are willing to go look at it.

From a ballistic standpoint, there is not much to gain by going with a barrel longer than 16".

If you reload:
  • Case length is more important than for a typical round.
  • Some recommend not using Starline brass in an AR.
  • Start shopping for the new 350L specific bullets (0.355") now. Using them (instead of 0.358" bullets) makes thing easier, but availability is not good.
  • If you do want to use 0.358" bullets, get a Lee 0.356" push through sizer die and use it. This has been proven to work fine.

What about .357 jacketed bullets, something like the 158 or 180g XTP? Would it be possible, or rather, practical, to size down a jacketed bullet to .355 for this use? Having only sized lead bullets, I would imagine it could not be too much worse than re-sizing 30-06 brass force wise........
