Ak Inquiry (Sights)

Seems as though my rear sight base is crooked on my Bulgarian Wasr 10/63.
To the naked eye, the trunnions are straight, as is the barrel. It is only the rear sight block that is pinned on just a touch crooked. I'd say it's off by a few millimeters. In order to fix this I would have to have the pin removed, the hole welded shut, redrilled and the pin reset, right? As far as I can tell the trunnions are fine, and it seems to be only one pin that holds the sight block in place. I've read a lot about these issues so I have a general idea of what you guys might say, so apologies in advance for beating a dead horse. But it's worth it just to try on the off chance I may be able to do something about it myself.

If you look on the right side bottom of the gas tube you'll see that the sight base sits a couple mm's high. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

I'd just shoot it as is, unless you can't get it to zero. In which case I'd sell it and buy something better.

I thought the WASR rifles were all Romanian.

As far as the sight goes, if you can zero it I wouldn't worry about it.

wasr 10s are romanian, not bulgarian, bulgarians are actually pretty well made, semi rare, and fairly sought after, WASRs are a dime a dozen.

you should be fine as is but one option which is probably easier and more likely to increase accuracy is to buy a techsight system. since the techsights mount to the rear of the receiver, you get a longer sight radius and you just remove the factory rear sight and forget about the trunnions being crooked.

I was half asleep when I typed that up. Yes, I have a Romanian wasr, and I should know that by now. lol

I really like the Tech Sights set up. I looked it up after I read your post. I've been wary of all of these dust cover sights and whatnot because of everything I read about them only being as stable as your dust cover, except for a few models I've seen that you actually bolt on to the tang for the stock, which would make field strip a PITA. As for the replacements for the original sight leaf like the peep sight versions, that wouldn't really do anything for the problem. I mean the rifle zeros but it's just one of those things that once I noticed it, it never stopped bugging me. I'll post some pictures once I get my Tech Sights in and show y'all how I did. Thanks again!

My advice is that you should probably sell that rifle. The WASR rifle is one intended for people interested in pure function and not overly concerned with cosmetics. I can nearly guarantee you that you will find other things to bug you if you keep it.

There are other AKs that are made with more attention to detail.

The TWS Dogleg mentioned above will probably be more economical in the long run than having the stock, short-radius sight redone and refinished.
