Reloder 17 & 30-06?
Anyone done load workups using Reloder 17? I have the data from Alliant for the maximum charge behind a 168 HPBT @ 56 gr & 2850 fps from a 22" barrel.
The powder is so new that it is not in any of my reloading data books. I was interested if anyone had any data for lesser charges. Sadly I have no Chrono so I cannot do this myself. My rifle is a bolt gun with 24" barrel. Roger

When I used to have access to a friend's computer with Quickload on it, I saw that it has loads for RL-17 in 30-06. Sadly, no more access though.

I got some for 30-06 when I couldn't find IMR4350. I contacted Alliant, and they told me to reference IMR4350 load data. I'll check when I get home for the charges I used, but I think I loaded 147gr 150gr bullets with it for 30.06, .308, and 8mm Mauser. I know the Mauser loads were very light.

You'll gain a bit of velocity with the longer barrel, but not enough to make a bunch of difference. Just reduce the 56 grains by 10% and work up.
Velocity is not as important as accuracy. Reloder 17 isn't that new either. It was new in 2007. |

I am using it exclusively for my 1903 Mil Surplus rifle (Sporters)
I was using 168s and now 175s. Hornady shows the load in the 165 to 168 gr bullets from 48.1 to 54.1 (always check the data!) Hornady is being more conservative than the powder people, others have really pushed this powder envelope wise in the 600+ yard shooting segment. they also get erratic pressure issues in cold temps as I recall. Not something I would do. I have seen very good accuracy in the 51 gr area with 175 gr HPBT. It does seem to smoke the necks a bit more, my guess is it does not have the pressure snap/peak 4350 and the like do as it’s a more progressive powder building pressure peak a bit slower. Sierra does not show it at all nor any other manual I have looked at so far. |

You might want to check with Alliant's web site, or the site for the bullet manufacturer. They may have it listed.

I took a look through my Alliant Powder manual. (recomendation?)..
They are showing many loads for the 30-06 with Reloader 17. Stop by your local gun shop, and ask if they have one. Got mine for free. PS... The loads listed in Alliant's book are Max Powder Charge only. Drop it down 10% and start from there... |

Berger manual has loading data for 30-06 using their 168gr bullet.
Start load 49gr/R-17 @ 2608fps max 54.4gr/R-17 @ 2782fps and test barrel was 26" long. I tried R-17 in one of my 30-06 back in 2009 didn't have much luck with it using 168gr or 180gr bullets. Since I got Berger manual been shooting few 185gr VLD in the 30-06 using R-17 so far accuracy is pretty good velocity low 2700fps. I've had pretty good luck with R-17 in 284,280AI and 270 using Berger data and bullets

Seems like RL17 does well in the shorter(308 class) cases.
They have a listing for the 7mm Rem Mag, but lets face it, I'm not going to a faster burning powder than RL19 in that. I use it for my 7mm-08, but only for bullets weighing less than 139gr. Otherwise I'm using RL19. |

Velocette,
All Alliant load data are maximum charges. You knock them down 10% to find the starting load needed. If you download their PDF version of their load data, it says that somewhere. (Edit: On page 8 of the 2013 manual, it is the first item under "WARNING! Be sure to:".) 10% drop in charge corresponds to about 20% drop in peak pressure for most rifle powders and loads (sometimes a little more) and that is enough to make them safe for a different gun and using different brass and primers. I generally work up from there for best accuracy and just stop there rather than trying to reach that maximum, as shot placement matters more than exact impact velocity in the majority of situations.
