30/40 Krag load question???

I was wondering if anyone had a load for a 190gr Hornaday BTHP????? the imr site has loads for 180gr and 200gr bullet. The powders i would like to use are h4895,imr4895, imr4064, imr4350 and h4350.But i will use something else if need be.Also is it possiable that since 190gr is in between 180 and 200gr can i use either of those loads for the 190gr????

YES ENTIRELY POSSIBLE, and I have done just that with such bullets in both my Krag rifle and carbine. This is WHY god invented calculators.

Start with data for a similar 200 grain bullet, and work up slowly. Hodgdon's data for the Sierra 200 gr BTSP would probably work well. You'll have to determine your own overall length.

I was thinking the same thing, but .30-40 Krag seems to be more popular in Ruger #1s, today, than surplus rifles.

I was going to suggest avoiding spitzers in an old Krag, but if it's a modern rifle, it doesn't matter.

The old Krags have long throats (often made longer by erosion). Using spitzers usually results in poor accuracy, and can cause funky pressure issues.

Hello, aarhunt. About using BT in Krag...just about every year before whitetail deer season, you'll hear guys in the gunshops ask for such and such a bullet..and of course they insist on boatails..I think the gunzines have them brainwashed into thinking they need them...now in Michigan, most shots in the woods anyway are way under 100yds. No harm in using them in the Krag...But, Your just wasting your money if shooting under at least 300yds.

redfield sight issues

Guys,

I have M1898 cut down with a what I believe is a Redfield Model70 sight (micrometer adjustment, mounted in place of the magazine cut-off). My concern is that I may have reinstalled it incorrectly as I had to adjust it off the elevation scale to zero it at 100 yds.

In other words... help!!

The Redfield sights are designed to work with the original front sight. If you didn't adjust the front sight height when you cut down your barrel, you'll have to do so to make the peep work with your existing set up.

I didn't do the cut down or install the sight originally, so I have no idea if it was done. What's the procedure for altering the front sight blade and is there a way to tell if it's been done already (other than having an other sight blade around)?

Start a thread about this issue in the Gunsmithing forum. You'll get more responses, and they'll be more detailed.

It will help, if you can get pictures of what you're working with. Of particular interest, would be: Front sight, rear sight, and overall view of the whole rifle. (Post them in the new thread, in the Gunsmithing forum.) Also provide a more detailed description of which way your adjusted the sight, and where you were hitting before the adjustments (high, low, how far, etc).
