The finish on the Swede M38

I just picked up an M38 in excellent condition, but I've got a question about the finish on the stocks. Compared to my M96, the M38's finish is a lot thinner and duller. I know the M38 is beech and the M96 French walnut but I assumed they were both a linseed finish. I'm wondering if the stocks were refinished at somepoint. They are in excellent condition...good but not too good.
