Hi all,

Joined a different club here in South Carolina and shot Sunday.

Tried out my new AR-10. Accuracy was wonderful, but the muzzle brake was terrible. I had hoped that it would just reduce recoil or have a null effect, but nooo, works great. But it's way too loud! I would not shoot this thing without ear protection. Anybody want to buy an AR-10?

Worked with my SIG 220 - no surprises there. Except - tried some Speer 185 grain GD. Horrendous muzzle flash. Grouped well, but the flash was very visible even during daylight.

Checked the zero on my .30-06. Had to get the muzzle recrowned due to my poking a rock when I tripped. The Leupold QR system works well. Fired three 180 grain Noslers into an inch and a quarter group 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. Windage was perfect. Ran a patch through the bore and put it back in the case.

All in all another good day.

Giz

Yes, I'd love to buy an AR-10, but if it's too loud... tell you what-- I'll give you $200 and a slightly used SKS, and we'll call it even...

(Ahem.) Why not just cut the muzzle break off? Recrown as needed.

Long Path, you are not a friend. I'll give Gizmo a brand new pre-ban SKS and $250 and pay for shipping both ways!

Boy, have you guys got the Xmas spirit or what? What wonderful offers!

Tell you what. I'll try to make all three of you happy. Anybody who shows up in Columbia SC will be welcome to shoot it. (George, please leave the Tongans at home)

Seriously, that damn muzzle brake irks me. I am starting to think about a supressor, or Long Path's suggestion.

Then again, I could sell it and upgrade one of my M1As.

Decisions, decisions.

Giz: You know how I feel on such matters. If thine firearm's parts offendth thee, slice them off.

I have a muzzle facer and a 11 degree target crown cutter that I could loan you. Unfortunately, I don't have a .308" pilot. Give me a shout, and we can arrange for a house/range call.

Please, it's a "brake", not a "break". It "slows" recoil, like a brake. The muzzle does not break when shot. Thank you for your attention to detail. Sorry, I'm not a jerk, just anal retentive. OK, I'm a jerk too, but mostly just anal retentive.

Thanks Futo! I can use all the help I can get!

Maybe that's the problem with the rifle! It's a break! I hate to say it, but it looks like a Freudian slip to me!

Futo: Of course, Giz can be forgiven this spelling slip since the blast from the rifle's muzzle brake is breaking his eardrums.

Muzzle brake no-no's

1. Make sure ALL SHOOTERS are BEHIND you, cause anyone in a 180 degree arc in front of you will be annoyed/deafend.

2. If its adjustable.. leave it open or shut, set it and shoot it (some can affect point of impact)

3. If its open... don't lean across your best friends' hood and pop a loping pronghorn... you may burn little holes in the paint of his new truck that look remarkably like the patteren on the brake.

4. If you are laying down many brakes will generate a cloud of dust FAR greater than you anticipated.

5. The collect all matter of residue and debris in the field.. clean them often.

I'd upgrade to a supermatch m1a, or M21 for the price you paid for the armalite.

Dr. Rob,

You forgot the most important thing about a muzzle brake - convinces the range idiots to put their hearing protection on. Nothing like watching some fool roll around on the ground with blood coming out of his ears to convince the unwashed. hehehehe

BTW - have the M21 clone. and the scout M1A and a standard M1A , owned a H&K91 for several years. The AR-10 out of the box has a better trigger and shoots tighter groups. Superior ergonomics and takes a scope base. I just hate that brake. !
