How old would a Winchester 94 AE in 30-30, serial number 526XXXX be?
Is there anything special about his model and year to watch for?

Maybe someone can come closer, but I would say mid 80's. The AE has not been out very long. There is nothing special to look for. Aside from the changes for angle ejection (to clear a top-mounted scope), it is the same as any other post-1964 94 model.

It is a good medium range hunting rifle.

My list of serial numbers ends at the beginning of 1983 withan SN# 5,103,249. Based on the number you posted, my guess would be very late 1983 or early to mid 1984.
