New Pietta 1858 ( Initial Review )

Just received my brand new 1858 from Cabelas
Paid 199.99 with free shipping.
Packaging was pathetic, little box inside a great big box with almost no protection, but arrived unscathed.
Finish of Frame and cylider: 100%
Finish of barrel: 90% , has a slightly dull finish, you can tell in the second photo.
Steel to Brass fit: 100%
Metel to wood fit: 100%
Trigger Pull: Crisp @ 4.25 lb. A bit to heavy, wiil have to work it down to 3.5 lb.
All cylinders Mic @ .450
I slugged the Bore, I used a .454 RB and it barly cut a ring, Lands measured .440
Grooves are very narrow so it is hard to measure as they are not straight across from each other.
Action is very smooth and Lockup is tight
Timing seems perfect as best as I can tell by looking down the barrel.
Barrel is clocked corrct "Sights are Straight"

Not quite as perfect as the Uberti I checked out, but for $150 less
I can live with the Finish not being perfect.
Range Report to follow this weekend

Notice the finish of the barrel is a little dull.

For my first outing I tried Pyrodex P and 777 fff
I used the Ox-Yoke Wonder Wad under the ball and no grease.
Also CCI #10 caps fit perfect. #11 caps would fall off when fired.
Groups where fired off the bench @ 10yds., it started raining to hard so I had to quit.
I did no cleaning of the Pistol and had no problems.
777 had alittle more kick, but not alot, both gave me lots of smoke

I like 30gr. load, that way I do not have to use a filler and it seems accurate enough.
I'm hitting 1.5" low and 1" left
In conclusion:
This is a Great Pistol

30gr. Pyrodex P

30gr. 777 fff
This is 5gr. over Max published load

Glad to see you finally got your Remy Hylander. If you're like me, next you'll want an 1860 .44 Colt, then you'll want a short barrel sheriff's model 1851, then you'll want another Remy in stainless, then you'll want a black powder rifle, then you'll want a black powder double barrel shotgun, then you'll want.....etc, etc, etc. There's no escaping the addiction.

I just received one of these too. Overall mine came in similar condition to yours. The blueing is excellent but the brass could use a little work. Also the trigger gaurd fit is not perfect and neither are the grips I would say 90 percent. I've noticed now that there are a some nicks on the cylinder almost like it turned with the hammer down. Overall I'm happy with it for the price

I just got the 1863 and the box and packing were very much similar.

Condition of the pistol was fine.

congrats on your 58s....

i purchashed four this pass dec.

two for me & two for a friend.

they were packed very secure in a large box with the single boxes inside.
all four have been true to your decriptions except our barrel finish is 100%.
these have proved to be very accurate & so far with over 100 balls thrown down range realible.
we use them for range shots & historical dress ups so eventually the worn look will be a plus but it is nice to know they look good when purchased.

i can''t say enough in support of cabelas. they back their products & have good customer support. i can't say that for the many other importers who offer italian historical guns.
being a retired reenactor i have be around italian guns since 1978 and have seen companies rise & fall, merge & conglomerate.
the quality has improved over the years though there are still italian companys that make questionable products & even the better comapnies have their occasional monday & friday gun.
makes ya wonder if the old timers ever had any rejects on their guns, maybe that's why gunsmithing was a good job back in the day
