Springfield 1884 Trapdoor Help
I just acquired a Springfield 1884 Trapdoor and I'm needing some help determining what I have and what the approximate value might be. Any help would be most appreciated. It is marked U.S. Model 1884, but the serial number seems to be from a later production that a 1884. The serial number, which is very clearly marked is 532447. This particular model has the round round bayonet that fits back inside of a groove in the stock and seems to have the proper cartouches on the barrel and the stock. The barrel is clean and the rifling is in good shape. The stock is also in nice shape. A clean gun overall.

I've got one with a serial that is 5000 higher than yours and it was made in 1892. My guess is it would cost about $900 to replace.

I think I understand the age question. The Model is 1884, but production continued for some time after, until either a new model was introduced, or production ceased, meaning not all of the model were made in 1884. Just as the Model 1873 Winchesters were made until 1923, tho they were all Model 1873's.
It may also have a mix of parts, which makes it interesting trying to determine exatly what you have. |

According to Joe Poyer in his books on the 45-70 Trapdoor Springfield, the year of manufacture would be 1891.
https://www.northcapepubs.com/ The Buffington rear sight was added so the 1884 model was called the 1888 model. ![]() ![]() This one was made in 1890 Last edited by OJ; October 9, 2010 at 03:25 PM. |
