Brand new to site, Brand new to reloading.
Looking for some help with powder choice. Will be loading 45acp, short barrel. Any suggestions on clean, fast burning powder. Getn alot of build up in chamber. Hoping a faster burning powder will help. |

I prefer Hodgdon TiteGroup powder for all my handgun loads - including .45acp ......
but a lot of powder residue buildup in chamber ??? 1. How often are you cleaning the gun /how many rounds thru it since it was cleaned ? 2. what kind of powder are you using now ? |

should've added
Been using some factory Winchester 230gr. in a Kimber Ultra.
Store bought some reloads. Something for "break in". Getting what looks like blow back around casing(circle the size of case). And extractor getting build up. Primers look ok. I clean after each shoot, usually 100 rnds. |

I'm loading 9mm para. and I happy for I have 2.5 lbs of Power Pistol, and 9 lbs of Win 231. I used alot of shotgun powder until I found a really good stash from a person who I actually know very well.

Power Pistol is very clean but I like Blue Dot, it is really dirty but it shoots good for me. I have just started playing with Unique and so far it is really good. Not sure how clean it is yet since I have shot Blue Dot first then the loads with unique. But again it shoots really nice and so far it has done well on the upper end of the load data for me.
While the Power Pistol is a clean burning powder I find it has more muzzle flip and less push. I can load blue dot "hotter" and feel less recoil plus for me the round is more accurate. I shoot a Springer XD with a 4" barrel and I have been using plated bullets from Rocky Mountain Reloading. |

I'm shooting a Sig P229. Power Pistol(right up there) with 147 grain XTP's has been my best accuracy cartridge. Round Robin with what I had. No chrono though. I am interested in Blue Dot now. I understand what is meant by push and flip... Dirty or not, I don't care. Really I clean my gun to hospital specs every time. I want to dial in a 125 grain Gold Dot. I may only use it for one shot... I haven't had alot of experience with varied powders...Shotgun, PP, WIN231.

I recommend Winchester WST, it's clean burning, soft shooting, and accurate in my experience.

I am using bullseye and win 231 for my plinking loads , and there is no comparision - the Win 231 is much cleaner.

Red Dot or Promo is good (and cheap to shoot.) American Select is ridiculously clean-burning.

"+1. I've found Magic in my 45's with WST. Scary accurate and soft shootin."
I've found it to do the same in 9MM, 40 S&W, and 45 Auto. |

Yeah, stay away from bullseye if you want clean burning.

Firstly, welcome to the forum!
It sounds like the reloads you were shooting were not your own, but were store bought reloads? If so, then there's no way of knowing what powder the reloader used unless you personally know him. You also don't mention what bullet type the reloads have, but if they're cast lead then the bullet lube used on them will contribute to fouling a bit, especially if there is lube left on the bases. With the bullets I cast myself, once I started wiping the bases off after lubing and sizing, my loads using those bullets shot much more cleanly with far less smoke and fouling. That said, there have been a number of powders mentioned that are known for not leaving much powder residue. Personally, I've used Hodgdon's Clays and Alliant's Power Pistol with great results.
