How Many Of You Weigh New Powder Cans?
I have an old habit of weighing a can of powder as soon as I get it home. It all started several years ago when I was shooting a lot of BP and the guy I purchased from was known for his accuracy in dispensing the powder.
Here's the thing. In less than six months I've run across 2 Hodgdon powder purchases that have weighed less than 1 pound. One of them was a can of IMR 8208 XBR, and the other was a can of H335. Both of these cans should have weighed out around 17 or 18 ounces with the cap and can, but the IMR 8208 came out at 10 ounces & the H335 came out at 12 ounces. I'm beginning to wonder if this is not a common thing and no one else is catching it because they aren't weighing their powder. Your thoughts? |

I have never weighed my cans of powder. But I think I might just start.

Wow,
I have never weighed any whole cans. You have got me curious now. I will have to find a scale that can handle of whole can of powder. GAR |

I use a postal scale to weigh mine. A standard kitchen scale will do as well.
I called them this morning to talk to them about it, and was in line for 30 minutes. I never got to speak to anyone before I had to leave, so I hung up. I plan on calling them back. I do know that on some of their powders it states different weights on the cans. 'Clays' is an example of this. However, all of the rifle powders I have ever owned from Hodgdon say 16 ounces or 1 pound on the can. That's what the powder inside should weigh. Then you add another ounce or two for the can and cap. |

I weigh 8 pound jugs of powder when I get them. I'm not worried about being shorted, I just want to know the gross weight, so I can tell how much powder I have left.
Were the seals in tact on your powder canisters? Are you sure your scale is accurate? |

Yes, all of the powder cans were sealed, and it's a certified postal scale. I take it to the post office once a year to have it recertified by them.

Never weighed a can of powder, but I always check to make sure there are 10 trays of primers in a box when I buy them.
Bought a box once and when I got home, there was only 7 trays in it. |

I don't use either of those powders, so I have to ask if there is supposed to be 16oz in the cans? I know some of the less dense powders come in standard size jugs but hold less weight of powder. I think I have some that say 14oz on the label and the Trail Boss may be as little as 9oz.

I've never pre-weighed new powder, but jepp2's reasoning makes total sense to me. I've got some unopened containers that will have their gross weight marked on them before I break the seals.

Never thought of doing it before now. Hopefully it's only a rare screw-up.

I have noticed on all my powder bottles that the factory seal can be removed and replaced without damage unless the lid is screwed down very tight.

peetzakilla,
I suspect the "factory seal" may be more of an additional gasket than a security device on some powder containers. Like you, I've got some that are like new on well used containers. |

Not so tamper proof seals.
I will have to agree that the tamper proof seal isn't tamper proof. It can be removed without damage in many instances. I'm gonna be checking weight also.

Someone gave me some jugs two weeks ago, and I weighed them, because they were not full.
The original owner died. There is a pound of H335 and two pounds of Bullseye left in there. |

Just bought a pound of Unique at Gander Mtn. today. Put it on my scale and it came out 1bl. 2.4 oz.
I'm weighing all the powder that I have to buy now. |
