Barnes Varmint Grenades
Anybody have load data for a 36 grain Varmint grenade for a 223? I have the original from the old Barnes website, but their website is still down and was wondering if there were any other loads besides the two they listed?

Lyman's #49 has 36 gr. Varmint Grenade data. I've used (from the Lyman manual) 26.0 gr. of Varget with a COAL of 2.240. Gives a chrono'd average velocity of 3260 fps, and was good for a 1" group at 100 yards. I would like to experiment more with them to see if I can get a smaller group, but I've switched to a 40 gr. Hornady V-Max behind a charge of H335. The VG's work just dandy on prairie dogs, often you will find only the top half or the bottom half of the poodle left, depending where you hit them.
![]() I tried 3 different charges of Varget, and the VG's seem to like to go faster; the 26.0 gr. charge made the best group between a 25.0, 25.5, and 26.0 gr. charge. Rifle was a Savage 16FCSS with a 22" 1:9 twist barrel. I don't have the manual in front of me, but I know it lists various powders for this bullet. CAUTION: This is the load that works in my gun. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information. Hope that helps. Cheers!
