500 smith primers
I am looking picking up a 500 smith, i was looking at reloading data and noticed there seems to be 2 different cases out there. one set up for lr primers and one set up for lp primers.
have they ever decided what to go with? |

I have Starline brass and use Large Rifle Primers. Cannot offer information concernin the large pistol primers as most of the loading data call for Large Rifle. Remember the 500 SW has allot of powder and you need something to ignite it
![]() H110 powder provides great accuracy from my 8" barrel 500 with the Hornady 350 JHP XTP. Right from the Hornady RL Manual 7th addition. My loads were 25 rounds fired to test accuracy. The same round was used to take three pig. First pig 340 pounds, second 405 pounds and the big boy at 427 pounds (black Russian) FAVORITE LOAD FOR HUNTING: CCI 200 LRP with 41 grains of H110. The accuracy at 50 yards maintained 2" groups from Hornady RLM states 1650 FPS but my chronograph states 1670 to 1681. I think this is where I states: Reload at your own risk and that TFL takes no responsibility for my post. Additionally this is from Hornady RLM 7th Addition for 500 SW. Welcome to the club! Cases for large rifle primers are the only ones manufactured now.
Cases with large pistol primers were only made for a while after the caliber was first introduced. |

The brass should have an "R" on the headstamp if it was designed for Large Rifle primers. I've only been shooting and reloading the .500 for about 6 months now, but I haven't seen any of the Large pistol primer brass despite using a variety of factory ammo during this time.
