+P cases for reloading
I just bought a bunch of once fired cases, there are some marked "+P+", are these going to be ok to reload with my standard loads? Is there any difference in them? They are also silver in color and not gold, there are a bunch of there, not necessarilly +P+, but will they be alright to load too?
Thanks as always Spleify |

Don't Reload the Silver Cases
The silver colored cases are probably made of aluminium and should not be reloaded. The link below give a good discussion on the subject.

The silver cases are proably nickel coated brass and fine to reload. Are they a shinny sivler or a dull silver. Dull silver will proably be aluminum, it has two flash hole inside. They are Berden primed. If they have a single primer flash hole inside the case they will be fine.
What caliber are you talking about. Most cases with +P markings are the same as regular cases. Just marked different to idenify them. There are some exceptions though. Like 45 ACP +P is different. It has a thicker web. |

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information. I am going to guess that you have RP 9x19mm Luger cases. Regular 9mm RP cases, +P RP 9mm cases, and +P+ RP 9mm cases all look the same in cross section. The marking on the case heads is just to help in keeping the loads separate. Most 9mm barrels have a chamber with a feed ramp with ~.190" of feed ramp intrusion. Most 9mm brass has a ~.160" thick web. There is then ~ .030" of thin case wall left unsupported. Most 9mm barrels have chamber wall .1" thick. Most 9mm pistols have slide of at least 10 ounces, and don't need a locking mechanism, as they could run in blowback mode. This all means that most 9mm pistols can run +P+++++++++++++++ loadings without pressure problems. The problem of concern becomes the recoil. Most 9mm pistols have ~ 12 pound recoil spring assemblies. With 50 pound recoil assemblies, the max load without the slide slamming the frame hard is about +P++++++. The slide slam is bad for the frame, slide, hand nerves, hand joints, and creating a flinch in the shooter. If I shoot double loads of Power Pistol in 9mm with stock springs, 3 shots and my shooting hand hurts for hours. |

I have several hundred +p cases for .38spcl that I do reload with +p charge.... the case themselves does not feel or seem to be heavier or more durable.

Wow thanks as always for the info folks.
Yes this is 9mm, but I believe it is FC +P+. And yes it is a shiny silver. The gun will be a S&W Sigma 9mm, this is my first 9mm and my first reloading of 9mm for my self, I helped a buddy make a bunch but this will now be for me. Thanks Spleify |
