Recipes Please
Hi all I am looking for recipes using the following components:
Bullets - .45 230gr LRN .38 158gr SJSP .44 240gr XTP-HP & CL-SIL Powder - Red Dot Bullseye Unique Power Pistol Clays Specifically I would like to find some recipes to use the power pistol with as I just got it and can't find any recipes online or in my manuals. And on another note is it reasonable to use a starting load for any type jacketed bullet assuming the weight is the same? So if I find a load for a JHP can I use it for the SJSP? |

Very often you will not find load data for the EXACT bullet your are using....but you can use load data for a bullet of the same weight and style.
ALSO, you can call the bullet manufacturer and they should have load data too.

So is a semijacketed SP close enough to a FMJ or JHP to use the data for those loads?

yup, as long as the weight is the same (or within a couple grains). Just work your load up from the starting load (as you already knew

For the .38 and .44 go by bullet weight and seat to the cannelure. As always start with the start load and work your way up looking for pressure signs such as cases sticking in the chambers. For the auto look at RN or FMJ data for appropriate length. HP bullets of the same weight are longer than solids.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to offer recipe advice on the net. I'm new to reloading (less than a year, considering I know people with 5,10, 20 years experience I consider myself still "new", in fact, I STILL use my LNL progressive as a single stage, and that's after starting with a Hornady single stage press).
But I read somewhere that it's downright dangerous to "experiment" with recipes. Most folks I'd think will share proven manufacturer recipes as they have been borne out to be safe by skilled engineers and technicians with all the right equipment. I have a post here regarding mil surplus rounds and no proven recipe. Well, dug through my books and found a recipe that matches quite well. Bought the bullets on GB and the seller gave me his recipe. Hmm. Don't know the guy. After thinking about it I ignore his recipe and went off and did some digging (turns out he was damn close but that's besides the point). When I first started I just went out and bought nearly every reloading manual that I could find. Then I match my components up with the recipe that fits them. *By experiment I mean cook up your own without using a base recipe. EDIT: For the folks that have been doing this for years I have a question: What do you do if you absolutely cannot find data for certain components? Call the manufacturer is a great idea. What about the powder companies? Are they responsive? Anyone have experience with this? Last edited by Alpha Centauri; September 7, 2009 at 07:50 AM. |

I have called Alliant on two occasions with good results. I have also called Claybuster about one of their wads and they were very helpful. Tim

thanks for the input guys, and don't worry I am not trying to experiment. I am just having some trouble finding some recipes for some of my components, specifically power pistol. I have read in a couple places that power pistol is not recommended for lead bullets because its too hot and can lead up the barrel. So that eliminates my current stock of .45 but I would still like to find some loads for the .38 or .44 using power pistol.
