New here, hi!
Just signed up, was promted by a search for info on the CVA 1861 colt navy 44. I got mine out and did a total teardown and cleanup. Feels like a new action
![]() ![]() I also have a .50 cal plains rifle kit that I assembled around the same time. It is a blast to shoot, and my son thinks it's the coolest ![]() |

Don't believe I've ever heard of an 1861 Colt Navy in .44 caliber. Perhaps an 1851 Navy? Or an 1861 Navy in .36 cal? Or an 1861 Army in .44?
At any rate, if it's truly a .44, there are three possibilities: .451, .454, or .457. I suggest trying the .454 first; if it leaves a full ring of lead upon loading, then stick with that. |

You nailed it on the head, as soon as I read the .454 listing I remebered that was it. I actually believe it was marketed as an 1860 Colt Navy .44. That kind of through me also. It looks like an 1860 Army .44 with the Navy scroll work on the cylinder. It was an unfinished kit and I finished it myself. I shaped the stock, and mixed cordovan and black shoe polish 80%/20% and rubbed it into the wood. Heated it with my heatgun, and buffed it to a high shine. Looks like a dark cherry red, and holds up great to the elements. The barrel I boiled until it would dry immediately when removed from the water and used a cold blue paste for about 5-7 coats. It is a deep blue/black with a polished shine. It is fun to shoot, and I only shoot moderate loads (25-28 grns) pyrodex. I have heard of people stretching the brass frames with hot loads, although I never have seen this personally.

The 1860 Army has a naval scene on the cylinder.

That could be, most of the "navy" revolvers I have seen have octagon barrels, but this one is round.

My Scouts would agree with your son. They enjoy firing my Kentucky. But I am waiting for the time when they can come out to shoot the double barrel BP shotgun. Something tells me their hearts will change.
Enjoy and we are glad to add you to out ranks. |

I enjoy BP for several reasons, I like the historical aspect, I enjoy the large calibres, I love the big whit cloud that hangs in the air on a still morning, and who can deny the draw of the boom only created by the pyrotechnic discharge of BP!
![]() I love the fact that I can shoot big bore for .22 $$$! ![]() |

Hey SG, looks like Wayne did a good job 767. I need to get a better bolt spring for mine, it's pretty weak.
You should think about doing a rust blue on that thing, I got lucky on mine, it's finish is still about 98% I just wish the springs had a little more tension in them. The hand spring is weak and the cylinder rattles a bit. I was going to put a ruger plunger in it but thought against modding it. I'll save that for the Italians. |

Thanks for the welcome, you all have some nice cap 'n' ball pistols there. I always wanted to get a steel framed pistol.
