I'm really partial to the Ithaca Model 37.
It's lighter and smoother than the Remington 870, and the slide release is on the right side of the trigger guard where I can actually reach it. The bottom eject is also super cool. |

well put. i will admit that the 870 is lacking in ergonomics in that the bolt release is far forward of the trigger. mossberg ergonomics with easy to reach release and top tang safety are pretty good. but my vote still goes with 870

I really like my mossberg 500 but the 870 just feels a bit more solid to me.

The 870 still gets top nod. Not only is it a great defense platform, but it's easily one of the better hunting shotguns too. For me, the 870 gets the nod for reliability, durability and good design. My 12-ga is a Winchester 1300 Defender, but the 870 is a 20-ga with a short barrel and a load of #3 buckshot.

FOR ME... You can't beat the ergonomically perfect layout of the Mossberg 500! Safety is ambidextrous and located where it is naturally operable while the gun is shouldered even with gloves on. For the right handed person the slide release is perfectly located so your middle finger can operate it from a fully shouldered position without moving your trigger finger from the trigger or gaurded position.
Just the ideal gun IMHO YMMV... Brent |

I don't have one, but I'd have to say it's the 870 Remington. The test of time, and sales have proven that.

I know there are a lot of good pump guns now, but I still love how reliable the old Ithaca is. ![]() I still have a Colt pump, keep it just because they don't make them anymore, and not many folks would wanna buy one with " Property of Jackson Police Dept." stamped on the receiver. |

The 500's and 870's are hard to beat, but my BPS is still the favorite. It's so pretty and smooth.

another vote for Mossberg
My 590 Mariner is one of my favorite guns, and my most used.

Another vote for the Ithaca 37. Mine is a Pre-73 18" "Police Special". So I can pump-fire it. Gets allot of looks at the range.

Browning BPS for me - fit and finish, smooth action, neutral cast on comb so its easy to shoot for lefties or right handers and the bottom ejection is also a plus if you have lefties or right handers using the gun.
My 2nd choice would be the 870 Wingmaster - also a quality gun. |

Love my 870 but the 500 is great also. Have had the same Mossberg 500 for 28 years with thousands of rounds thru her and never had a problem. Always cleaned and oiled it after every use.

Winchester Model 12
Winchester Model 12, with out a doubt. I have a Model 12 with the barrel cut to 18in. that is the one I'm going to grab if the problem can be handled with a 12ga. I also have a Model 12 skeet gun. Super slick actions and I have never had a problem with the single action bar binding.I prefer the safety on the front of the trigger guard rather than the back like the Remington or the top like the Mossy. Thats also the reason I chose the Maverick for my car gun. I do own 2 Mossberg 500's however and a bunch of doubles, singles, over-unders, and a couple of autos. I hope to find a reasonable rifle sighted Ithaca 37 riot gun someday but It won't replace the Winchester.

I voted 870 but will go along with the Mod. 12. I have my grandfathers, oldie but a goodie, and it's much smoother than my later model 870.
Here in the salt air, we have to clean frequently. I did shotguns last weekend and cleaning that old Mod.12 always brings back fond memories. |

I choose the BPS in that I shoot a lot of small gauge. I feel that the BPS in the smaller gauges has a little more solid feeling to them than the Remingtons.

870
I heard the military has their contract with Mossberg. But I would never trade my 870 for one. It's an 18" all black with 6+1 shot tube. I like the front grip and the looks in general better on the 870 than other pumps. Plus, I could never imagine in a million years having a problem with my 870.

870's will be the hands-down winner in the pump category. They last forever and just plain work.
