Where do you buy your components?

Hi everyone, I'm new to reloading. I actually just ordered my press, dies, powder measure, etc etc.

Here's my question. Where is the best place to buy/order powder, brass, bullets, and primers? The only store I have within driving distance is Cabela's. Their prices seem to be higher than average for other things, so I'm assuming the same would be true with their reloading components. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Dave

Most of what I use I buy on Midway. There are probably some cheaper places for this and for that, but they are unmatched as one stop shopping, and their customer service is great.

I don't buy hazmat from them, though, as you get slammed with huge extra shipping charge, so the powder and primers I buy at the local store or gun show.

Used brass I buy on either AuctionArms, or GunBroker.

Powder Valley or Graf's for Haz Mat. I buy most stuff from Graf's but I get a dealer discount.

Dave,

Without knowing your specific caliber, it's kinda tough, but here's some information and links:

buy/order:

powder - At your local gunshow or through group buys off of various websites online. The group buys allow you to get together enough quantity to either eliminate or reduce the "per jug" cost of hazmat fees. Seek out other reloaders in your area.

brass - You can often pick up very good brass from members of the reloading forums you visit. You can also pick up range brass as well. Most often, it is once fired. Of course, there's also online dealers depending on what you're looking for. Again, group buys are a good thing to split shipping.

bullets - Again, gun shows and group buys where you get discounts for quantity that often will offset some of the shipping.

primers - See powder above. Best deals are usually to be found with powder and primers in group buys.

Some good websites, not in any particular order:

Sorry about that. I will be loading .45 ACP and 9mm. I will be reloading only for target ammo, I use factory JHP ammo for self defense purposes. I am looking at Berry's bullets, and I have a question. What does FP stand for? The offer 115 gr. 9mm bullets in RN, which I believe is round nose, and FP. The FP rounds are $10 cheaper per 250 bullets. I will be shooting the 9mm rounds through a Glock 26 and the .45 ACP rounds through a Taurus 24/7 PRO and a Para Ordnance 1911.

Thanks for the help guys!

I would suggest buying small quantities from Cabela's until you find a powder you like then buy on the web. I buy from http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/ and http://www.grafs.com/ also. I get a dealer discount at Graf's with a C&R lisence so I buy from them if it's in stock. As a non dealer at Graf's you will get free shipping. When you start buying online you will want to buy in quantity to get good prices. I do this with a couple of friends and we will buy 50,000 primers at a time or 50 pounds of powder. Both of those will be only one $20 hazmat. You can also mix primers and powder in the same order up to 50 pounds for one hazmat fee.

I used to buy bullets from Midwayusa, until Ranier jacked the prices up about 20% in January. Now I buy bullets from the local gun show's around here, I can get 1000 40 S&W plated bullets for $100/1000 out the door, compared to about $105/1000 + shipping on Midway = $120. For powder, its gun show's or Sportsmans Warehouse, good selection and good prices. Primers, its the gun show, they are $3 a brick cheaper than Sportsmans Warehouse. I save all of my brass from my factory ammo days, so when I started reloading, I already had a pile sitting there.

Try www.recobstargetshop.com They have very good prices on powder and primers. They are also local for me, so of course that is where I go.

Mostly I buy primers and powder from powdervalleyinc.com. Sometimes I'll buy a 1# can of powder locally if I want to try a new powder before buying a whole keg of it.

I cast most of my own bullets. I buy some bullets from mastercastbullets.com, and I buy some overpriced bullets at Cabela's when I can stack multiple discounts to get a good price.

For 9mm - Try Montana Gold

For 9mm also consider Montana Gold 115 gr JHP - $69 per M delivered, if you buy in lots of 4,000. Berrys are $74 for 115 gr HP copper washed. You may want to try a thousand of each, and see which one shoots best in your gun. Keep the Berrys under 1100 FPS. Good Luck-

yeah..

Be careful about that Hazmat fee....if you pay $20.00 for a pound of pwder..its still less expensive than that Hazmzt deal.

Cabela's is the only supplier near you? I'd keep a look out if you travel out of your general vacinity....it's o.k. to buy these even out of state and take them with you back home.

I'm not trying to sponser the Sportsman Warehouse....but alas...they cost just the same as wholesale over the internet....usually. I've compared cost and honest to God...I cannot beat this warehouse prices by mail order. (Internet that is!)

Good Luck

That depends on how much and where you buy. After hazmat and shipping my powder cost around $14 a pound.

Bullet help needed!! Lead vs. FMJ?

I've noticed while doing my reloading research that lead bullets are a lot cheaper than FMJ bullets. My 9mm is a Glock, so I know I have to use FMJ in that, but could I get away with using lead bullets in my Taurus 24/7 PRO .45 ACP and my Para Ordnance 1911?

Thanks!

Hey Berks County here too

There are alot of small gun shops in Lebonon County that have relaoding supplies. If you wish send me an email and I can give you a few that I use. Thet are a little more reliable then Cabelas expecially on powder.

bullet suppliers

moyerscastbullets.com is in PA. They might be close to where you live. They seem nice enough to deal with. They have a full range of lead bullets to buy. And they sell them in 100 round, 500 round and 1000 round lots. Flat Rate USPS shipping.

Hello Dave. Cabelas is certainly a bit high in the component prices. I get my powder and primers from either Shydas gun shop in Lebanon PA or Richland Shooters Supply in Richland PA. Both are not too far from you. I buy components in 8lb jugs and primers by the case so I have not been to either place in about 6 months so I don't know what the current prices are. I do know that these are the cheapest places of all the gunshops that I visit (and I certainly have done my share of gunshop visiting) As far as bullets and brass, I usually buy in bulk from midway. Make sure you phone ahead before visiting either one of these shops to make sure they are open, because Shydas closes early on some days of the week, and Richland closes from 4-6pm (dinner break) and reopens from 6pm-9pm.

is within reasonable driving range. Roger's a good guy with good bullets. Specializes in lead bullets. I get my 45caliber 255grain SWCs there.

Midsouth Shooter's Supply.
It's just down the road and I can do a order over the phone then pick up 2 hours later. Saves quite a bit in shipping and Haz-Mat fees.
