.22WMR pressure curves?
Hi i am after help i dunno if you have seen my other thread but i am university student in Edinburgh Scotland and have a engineering design project of a pengun. I have a thread about that and my purpose here is to ask with some help regarding the above. For this design (and it is only a design nothing more) we need to be able to give the energies of a bullet at various points. Now this is the round we are aiming for, a 30 gr HP giving a Mv of 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s) and Me of 322 ft·lbf (437 J). Now i assume this is for a longish barrel, in our case there will be a barrel of like 2 inch if that so i was wondering if anyone could help with information on the powder used in this one and if someone could help regarding the pressures. If not is there anywhere i can find powder burning rates and the pressures? I appologise for the lack of information but it is a lot to take in especially when you live in a country where we have such restrictions! Any help greatfully received
Regards Tony |

I hope you find someone to help you here, sadly most of us don't study internal ballistics to any extent we just stick with the data in our books that tell us the maximum powder charge for a given powder and bullet. We are looking at external and terminal ballistics. You might possibly get that sort of data from a powder mfg. I must admit they are usually quite closed lipped about actual burn rates. proprietary information and all that.

thank you for the quick reply. I have to admit i fel very fish out of water, a week ago i had no idea abotu anything but i have spent a few hours reading here and apart from being in awe i have certainly learnt enough to impress friends who thought they knew weapons. Tho i really do want to go to a range....

one of the better reference books around here is the Sierra," Rifle and Handgun Reloading Data". It has an excellent section on ballistics in the back. Way back when I was a teen street gangs made zip guns with nails rubber bands and automotive radio antennas. there you we driving a 30 gr bullet at about 900 f/s

thank you, will have a look, coz its an engineering project everything has to be justfied. means even if something is proven to work we have to say why we are using it.

Rimfires are not considered to be reloadable, most short barrel ballistics for the 22 WMR will most likely be from a vented barrel.
