45 ACP reloads

I have went from 200gr rn to 185 swc, I'm using 231 powder and I'm having problems with extraction. I have tried 5gr and 5.5 gr of 231 and still have the problem. The data sheet shows 5.0 for starting loads and 5.9 for max load. I have gone to the lighter spring and still have the same problem. I'm shooting a S&W 945-1.
Please help
Don

What type of 185 gr SWC are you using? Lead, jacketed, plated?

My manuals show 5.5 gr as a good starting point for WW231. Depending on the type of bullet, you can go higher than the 5.9 max you indicated.

Stove piping, in general, is caused by insufficient recoil for the installed spring. There are two ways to help your problem: use more powder as I mentioned above or install a slightly weaker recoil spring. Usually the powder method is more desirable.

Try 5.7 grains and keep upping it by .1 grains until you either fix the problem or reach a max pressure range. Personally, I would go no higher than 7.0 grains if using jacketed bullets and 6.5 grains if using lead or plated.

I load Nosler 185gr JHP with 6.2-6.5 of W-231 at 1.210" COAL, in my 1911 with VG results. Start low and work up.
