Beretta Safety

I have a Beretta 96 Brigadier .40 cal pistol. I have been told by a couple of military friends that there is a large number of instances where the slide blew off the back of the 96s. Anyone able to shed light on these rumors? If this is true, what action can be taken to prevent this or should another pistol be bought to replace?

Eric

20 years later...... this legend still persists.

When YOU see a Beretta slide shoot off the back of one... let me know.

I will document the heck out of it.

I don't expect to ever hear from you though.

It happened to a few Beretta 92s (9mm) when it was adopted by the US military. Beretta modified the hammer pin and slide to retain the slide to the frame in case the slide fractured, and a change to the metallurgy of the slide was incorporated to prevent the slide from cracking altogether.

The .40 S&W Beretta 96s have the same improvements as the 92s. Unless you're shooting old US Border Patrol ammo (hotloaded 155gr Remington JHP) your gun should be just fine.

I carried a Beretta 96FS on patrol for several years. The Brigadier has a more rugged slide.

If you're scared of your beautiful Beretta make me a deal on it and get out with all your teeth while you still can. Then you can buy a Glock and live happily ever after.

And if you don't want to sell it....you could send it to me and I'd be nice enough to shoot it for a year or so to see if it's going to break then I'll send it back to you.

if you have a Brigadier the gun has an oversized hammer pin, so even if the slide broke off it can't fly back.

100% safe
