165gr in 40 auto
OK My Lyman manual only lists 165gr fmj and has no listing for the 165 hollow points. I also have some 165gr golden saber hollow points. I would like to use Unique powder, because that is what I have. But the Alliant sight has no data for a 165gr load at all. Anyone out there have any suggestions. I guess I could buy a different powder if I need to.

Steves pages list 165 and unique at 5.2-7.2, but his max loads run a little hot.
I would start at 5.5 and 6.0 and see how they shoot. The total lack of 165 grain data frustrated me to the point where I switched to 155, there's TONS of 155 data available. ***EDIT*** My sierra book lists a load for 165 JHP and unique, starts at 5.2 grains for 850, and the max is 7.0 at 1150 FPS. (I personally wouldn't go over 6.8 grains unless directed to by someone who spent some time with unique and the 165 JHP.) I forget what I loaded 'em at, I think it was just a tiny bit over 6 grains.

I have recently stated loading 165 bullets for my 40S&W handloads. I'm using Montana Gold Bullets cmj and VihtaVouri N340 powder. The money I save with the MGB bullets helps cover the expensive V-V powder. The MGB bullets do tend to run a little slower than the Rem jhps (not Golden Saber) that I used to load. Anyway, I'm loading 6.1gr of N340 in re-cycled cases with CCI primers at an OAL of 1.125". From my Glock 22 (with an after market Wilson barrel) I'm getting an average of 950fps. This is just about 100fps slower than factory Rem 165gr Golden Saber. Plenty fast enough for my needs and this load shoots very well from the old 2nd generation (and still going!) G22. I usually never use CCI primers but have had several thousand laying around for years now that I figure I'd better use up. The next batch will have Winchester. The V-V N340 burns fairly clean, and has a fairly low muzzle flash. Let the forum know how your Unique loads work out. Especially if the "new" unique is really any better than the "old" style was.

.40 loads with Unique
I load for my Sig 229 .40 and have tried 4 different powders with 180 gr hard cast flat points. I have tried Bullseye, AA#9, Blue Dot, and Unique. So far, the Unique has produced the best all around results for me. I use 5.1 gr Unigue, CCI primers (prefer Winchester, but have CCI over abundance) and crimp just enough to firmly hold the bullet. OAL is 1.112-1.113. This is an accurate load for me. I don't have a chrony, but it shoots to same point of aim as factory 180 gr ammo. It has been easy on my gun and not too dirty. AA#9 has produced the better strong loads for me, but some have suggested that AA#5 is a better choice.
