Trying to identify a Wesson .357

A recent family member passed and left one of his guns to my wife and I. I've looked around a little on this site trying to identify it, but I'm not sure if I've got it right. It has what looks like about a 6 inch barrel that says "Dan Wesson Arms .357 Magnum CTG." On the right side it says, "Dan Wesson Arms, Monson, Mass USA." The serial number is 2999xx. It has an adjustable rear sight. From what I've read on here it should be a model 15, but I wanted to check first. I'm not sure how old it is or anything and was hoping someone would see the serial number and know about when it was made. It also came with a Safariland carrying case and a safariland holster. I'm not looking to sell it by anymeans, but I was curious what the value of something like this is? Thanks.

If it is deeply blued, classic lined and purrs when you rub it, it is a Model 15. The barrel should be a heavy ventilated rib and might have a red, white or yellow front insert. The specific model number could be a M15-2V 6". Did you happen to also inherit the barrel tool/wrench, the gap gauge and any extra grips?

A heavy vent rib model would have a model number of 2VH not 2V. The heavy barrel shroud models have a full lug. The shroud could be had in several different configurations.

Barrel locknut?

On the muzzle end, is it recessed within the shroud, or a 12 sided nut that stands proud of and bottoms on the shroud?

It is a very deep blue, almost black. The barrel is actually 7 1/4 inches long and it does have a red insert on the front sight. No barrel wrench or tools of any kind came with it. The nut on the end doesn't seem to be recessed. The lines for the tool look like they are right on the end. I found a couple that look very simliar on the gunbroker website just now and the barrel is the heavy and vented kind. The only difference between this one and some of the ones on there is the logo on the grip. It has wood grips with "DW" on both sides. Most of the ones on gunbroker had "DWA." Any significance? Thanks for all of the replies I really appreciate it.

The DWA stocks are just newer stocks. The company's name now is Dan Wesson Arms thus the DWA emblem.

You have a Model 15. The original Model 12 with the outside barrel nut-very
quickly changed to the recessed design- has what are called "pork chop" barrel shrouds that cover the front of the frame with a dimple that fits over a
corresponding stud on the frame. The 2 styles of shrouds are not interchangeable.

Dan Wesson used up his parts inventory.

Early Model 15s were indeed fit with the old Model 12 barrel shrouds (depending upon length in stock), and most notably Model 12 sights that were less than perfect. They had a bad case of the wobbles.
Dan prefered the exposed nut, said it was much easier to assemble and manufacture, but people were turned off by the cosmetics.

None of the DWs had model numbers on them, you just have to look at the details of things like the barrel shroud, muzzle nut & so on.

just means its chambered for the .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum round (cartridge), it has nothing to do with model numbers.
