Is this thinking wrong?
Since I have't bought a Chronograhp yet, I don't know how fast my handloads are flying out of my .223. I have noticed that a particular handload groups 2 inches high of the bulleyes eye, the same as remington factory ammo I have shot. Both bullets handload and factory are 55gr. Can I conclude that the velocities must be very similar? Or am I drawing the wrong conclusion?

Impact points are only a small part of it. I would not use it for velocity comparisons.
If it is the same bullet (exactly the same) you could use the drop at extended range to form some idea, but 100 yard info tells you little to nothing about velocity. |

Yup. You need at least two data points - more's better. & that's for same-same bullet shape.
