Blagojevich on FOID card fees--ISRA
ISRA-PVF: Blagojevich May Bend Truth on Gun Card Fees
U.S. Newswire 4 Jun 13:23 ISRA-PVF: Blagojevich May Bend The Truth Attempting To Explain Away Gun Card Fee Increase To: National Desk Contact: James Vinopal of the ISRA Political Victory Fund, 815-635-3166 CHICAGO, June 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the ISRA Political Victory Fund (ISRA-PVF): Late last week, Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Ryan aired a television ad criticizing his Democratic opponent, Rod Blagojevich, for proposing a huge increase in Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card application fees. Blagojevich has admitted that, as a State Representative, he sponsored legislation slapping law-abiding firearm owners with an increase in the FOID fee from $5 to $500. Now that he is in the political hot seat, Blagojevich claims Ryan is being unfair since the bill was later amended to pare the fee back to $25. The bill ultimately went down in defeat. In response to the Ryan advertisement, the Blagojevich campaign has promised to release its own television advertisement denying that Blagojevich supports a FOID fee increase. The ISRA-PVF is warning Illinois voters that Blagojevich's upcoming advertisement will tell something other than the truth. It is a safe bet that the Blagojevich advertisement will not discuss the reason why he proposed a tenfold increase in the FOID application fee. Luckily, the transcripts of floor debate on the proposal make Blagojevich's reasoning quite clear. In that debate, Blagojevich states that he is proposing the huge FOID fee increase for one reason, and one reason only - to make people think twice about owning a gun. In other words, Blagojevich expressed his belief that it was acceptable to use the taxing authority of the legislature to discourage law-abiding citizens from exercising a constitutional right. Blagojevich's reason for proposing the FOID fee increase should come as no surprise. His legislative record clearly illustrates his fundamental opposition to private firearm ownership. Nonetheless, playing both sides of the gun issue has become the hallmark of Blagojevich's gubernatorial campaign. While appearing down state, Blagojevich claimed to be an avid supporter of the citizen's right to own guns. But, while in Chicago, Blagojevich gleefully accepted the endorsement of gun-control extremist Sarah Brady and boasted about his "F" candidate rating from the NRA. "Blagojevich has treated gun owners like political punching bags," commented ISRA-PVF chairman Jim Vinopal. "But now that he is running for state-wide office, he realizes that he has to convince at least some gun owners to vote for him. The only way that Rod Blagojevich can run away from his extreme record on guns is to lie about it. I think Mr. Blagojevich will find that the state's gun owners are not the rubes he thinks they are." ------ The ISRA-PVF is a political action committee affiliated with the Illinois State Rifle Association. The Illinois State Rifle Association represents the interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois gun owners.
