6.5-284 loads (again)
I have a new Pac-Nor barrel (28" long, 1-8" twist, 1" contour, 3 groove).
Here is what I have to get started: Bullets: 142gr Sierra's, 140gr A-max's, and 139 Lapua Scenars Powder: H4831 Primers: WLR, WLRM, Federal GM210M's, and CCI 250 Large Rifle Magnum's Brass: Lapua I have done several searches and have gotten as much info as I could find but I have a few more spcific questions. I plan to do most shooting under 600 yards (mostly less than 400 yards). I plan on starting with about 50grs of powder with the 142's and the GM210M's with the bullet just into the lands. After I get a decent load figured out I will change primers and look for improvements (hopefully). Next I will change bullets a go through the same process. Does this sound like a good plan? Any opinions are welcome! Does anyone use a Magnum primer with H4831? How about a Minimum/Maximum range for HH4831 and 142gr bullets? Thanks, Keith P.S. I have received emails once before from some board members with good info. Unfortunatly, that was lost when my comp took a dump. |

Your biggest contributors to load accuracy are going to be powder and bullets. Powder needs consistancy in the charge (weight and volume). This also controls the velocity of the bullet which is key finding the sweet spot of your rig. Some barrel-chamber setups shoot better with different shape bullets.
In load development, try picking a bullet then running a series of powder charges. Then switch bullets and run the powder series again. Repeat as necessary. Load 10 of each combo. Some where in here you'll need to worry about the seating depth of the bullet as well. Usually with the best combo from each bullet. If nothing seems to shoot, work the seating depth earlier. Primers are "fine tuning". Stick with the one brand for now, Federal Match is a good guess. If you do start modifying your load (ie primers) back off the charge and work up again. Especially if you go from normal to magnum. |
