VV310 in .38

1. For some reason VV does not publish any loads for VV310 in .45. However, it seems that the underground accuracy loading for .45 target work is 310. It seems that most recipes run from 3.9 to 4.4 grs. Bullseye shooters swear by it for accuracy and cleanliness.

Is there any particular reason that VV chooses not to publish loads for this powder?

2. Does this powder lend itself to .38 lead bullet reloads in 148-158 gr. range?

That works very well. IIRC my current batch is 3 gr. flat with a 158 gr. SWC. This is a pretty mild load, for bullseye type shooting, not elephant hunting. I'm at work now, so I don't have any of the books available. I'll have a look and see what they have published in Scandinavian languages when I get home.

I have now looked at a couple of manuals. In a Norwegian reloading manual (VV powders are very pupular here) I found .45 acp loads from 4.0 to 4.5 grains of N310 with a 230 gr. FMJ bullet (678 to 764 ft/sec). I have no personal experience with these.

My own bullseye load in .38 Special is as mentioned above around 3 grains of N310 under a 158 gr. lead SWC. The manual lists loads for this bullet weight from 3.0 to 4.0 grains (645 to 813 ft/sec). With a 148 gr. WC the loads listed are from 2.5 to 3.3 gr. (705 to 825 ft/sec).

All of these loads are slow and weak precision loads. My .38 loads will give one ragged hole at 25 meters from my S&W 686 when I do my part. That does not happen nearly as often as I could wish

Why Vihtavuori doesn't publish these loads, I don't know. But it may have something to do with the rapid burnrate of the powder, there are relatively small margins for error before maximum pressures are reached. And with the number of ambulance chasers increasing all the time... As always; the author has no control over how these data are used and cannot accept any liability... Be safe.
