M1A Scout Squad
I finally did a review of my favorite rifle. Anyone else love the Scout Squad or Socom?

Thanks for showing the stoppage when the empty casing jammed against the scope.

Socom
I've wanted a SOCOM since they first came out. The semi M14/M1a was authorized as a heavy patrol rifle in the early days of my career . I always wanted to purchase a SOCOM and get it approved for patrol carry, but never did. The agency did acquire a dozen or so (semi) M14's from the DOD and distributed them out to select personnel and I was lucky enough to get one. That sort of scratched my M14 itch.
Aside, I see the Squad/Scout as neither fish not fowl, but that is a personnel stance. Good luck with yours. Several .308 bolt rifles in the safe! |

Or good red herring.
The point of these sawn off infantry rifles, right up to the most modernist and tacticalist supersoldier guns is apparently ease of getting in and out of vehicles. |

My days of being rifle armed getting in and out of vehicles, armored or otherwise, rolling, flying or floating are a half century in the past.
And the issue rifle in those days was the M16A1. I was in the last class of Army Small Arms Repairman (MOS 45B20) trained at the USAOC&S at Aberdeen Proving Grounds that was trained on the M14. Graduated 2nd in my class (and got promoted ![]() I prefer the full length rifle, it's just "right" for me. I've got carbine bolt guns for hunting in thick cover, don't have a use or a need for a chopped M1A, but if you do, then enjoy!

I missed out several times on owning m1a, and used to feel bad. Not any longer. AR-10 has been a better choice.
I also like long rifle better. Better speed, less noise. -TL Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk Last edited by tangolima; June 1, 2025 at 07:10 PM. |

Have one of the M1A Socoms, and didn't get it for ease of getting in/out of vehicles. Its been modified by recutting the barrel crown, smaller dia rear peep and front site post, standard handguard and different front brake (cause changing gas lock for front site).
edited to say stock was changed to vltor adjustabtable It's now more than accurate enough to 100 yds, short enough for short stature and cog moved closer to body. It fulfills the want of compact, close range and hard hitting rifle. But not for shooting little dots on paper. It does compete for attention with 16 in FAL para, that also has shortened stock. Also have the full size version, but it gets used much less often. Last edited by zeke; June 3, 2025 at 04:43 PM. |

Not much of a fan of either configuration of the rifle.
And not much of a fan of people plugging their videos without a synopsis or basic summary. But I am glad that you had fun.
