The downside, of course is that if we did that, almost no one would actually get elected, as its likely "none of the above" would win, almost every time.
I fail to see a problem with that.

Once it started happening with some regularity, and no "official business" was transacted because no "officials" were elected, people who wanted officials would probably draft competent people who could get elected.

To keep this 'firearm related' - if someone builds a straight-pull AR-15 with no gas port / gas tube, which clearly will not operate as a semi-automatic rifle, is that banned too or is it OK?

n my town, the voting supervisor checks person ID, driver's license,
Haha in my state the governor made it illegal to check ID at the polling places . In essence, making it illegal to check for voter fraud. Please don’t talk about no evidence. There’s a reason there’s no evidence , that reason is because they refuse to allow anybody to find it.

IF you fail to see a problem with that, it's because you're not looking far enough ahead. Yes, we could go through several election cycles until someone is elected, but what happens while we are doing that?? The offices don't go away, the need for official business being done doesn't go away, and some of it simply cannot be put on indefinite hold, and the people holding the office aren't just going to vanish, either. Some may step down at the end of their terms turning their office over to their deputy (Or someone appointed by the Gov) to fill the office in a caretaker role, but I think it likely others will not, and will remain in office until removed, or finally replaced by a "duly elected" replacement.

The former is suboptimal solution, but workable, while latter is a dog's breakfast where last night's vomit is the most appealing ingredient.

Simply look at the language of the applicable law(s). IF you build a manually operated rifle, even if entirely from AR-15 parts, it is still a manually operated rifle, so look at what the law bans/restricts. Whether included by name or specific features, the AR is banned/restricted as a semi automatic firearm. IF it is not a semi auto, no law covering semi autos applies.

There's no "math" involved.
Kindergarteners understand "Rate these cookies on a scale of 1-10".

If a voter can't figure that out, I don't think they need to vote.

Mainstream media is reporting today that the bill has been pulled, and is now in "legislative limbo".

When the gun banners feel they have enough support, I'm sure they will re-introduce it.

AMP: the last information I had from CSSF and RMGO was the bill got so hammered by input that it was tabled. If accurate, that's a huge win.

OTOH, it could be just hanging around without action until a time desired (next election, next opportunity to slide it in, etc).

It evolved into a FOID like Illinois and passed the house yesterday. It goes before the Senate.

I anticipate millions to be spent defending it. Well done Bozos of Colorado.

Here's CO Dem Amy Paschal hard at work during the gun control debate.
