Charts for pyrodex?
So, I've been shooting my smoke pole with 90 grains of pyrodex behind a 250g sabot. So I made an online inquiry about using 100 grains, cause more is better . . . right. Found a response that said yeah, even up to 150. So is there a chart or table or some such that tells one how much pyrodex one can put behind the various weights of projectile? If it makes a difference, I'm shooting an inline traditions, in fifty cal. And yeah, I know you gotta test the different loads and projectiles for accuracy.

I don't know of such a chart. But I used to have a Traditions Buck Stalker and in it's owners manual it said up to 3 pellets or 150 grains of powder. I did try it a time or two and well I quickly didn't think that much punishment to my shoulder was necessary for the ranges I would be shooting. The Rifle seemed to like 90-100 grains of powder with a low drag sabot and 250 grain bullet. I'll keep an eye on this thread in hopes such a chart has been worked up by someone. That indeed will be helpful info to have around.

Owner's Manual . . . right!
Thanks Deer Slayer. Yes, the owner's manual would probably tell me more of what I need to know, at least in terms of the limits of the powder load. Duh. I even think I know where it is. Gotta love it. When in doubt . . . read the directions. :-)

You can't overload it. Too much and it will just spit it out the muzzle.

In the October 2007 American Rifleman magazine Bryce Towsley posted the results of his testing of Goex, Swiss and Scheutzen black powder and all the black powder substitues in production at that time. The test rifle was a Knight rolling block with a 27" barrel.
100 grains of Pyrodex RS gave a velocity of 1,850 fps. 150 grains of Pyrodex RS gave a velocity of 2,139 fps. About ten years ago a friend and i ran tests on Pyrodex, 777 and Black MZ owder using a .50 CVA inline rifle. Our results for Pyrodex RS Were close those of Mr. Towsley. In our tests Pyrodex Select gave a velocity of 25-30 fps faster than Pyrodex RS. Last edited by thallub; December 2, 2024 at 09:36 AM. |
