Small 1/4lb load
No its not aimed ta the horse trailer . its the angle of the camera. Trailer was about 20 yards to the left of the trajectory .
Yes blank round not a live fire waiting on fuses for that .

Does anyone know the one-shot-stop rating for a 12 lb howitzer?

Just in time......

for the Fourth of July ! Might pull that baby behind the antique tractor in the big parade.

For those of us with inadequate cannoneer knowledge.....you might want to explain some of the accessories and their purpose/function. It looks like the ramrod/swab is tucked along the left side ( a little hard to see fine details in the shade).

What do the chains do?

Is a friction fuse set off with a lanyard?

Did you make the wheels, or are they repurposed?

The covered cylinder on the right side?

Not howitzers but live fire explosive shells. I like this vid because you can hear the shells. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL1DkrYL70s

RIDING LAWN MOWER FOR THE WIN!!! Strap that thing to the back of the mower with a wagon, or, replace those wheels with rubber-tired ones, so it would be street-legal

Ok so this piece is a full size , 12lb ,1841 Mountain howitzer on a 2nd model carriage
Looking at the first picture you see on the lefts side the worm and mop. Think of the mop as a swab for wiping the bore both to reduce fouling and get rid of hot embers . The worm is used for pulling loads and for cleaning out the improved breech ‘
. On the right side is the rammer and another mop. Which would be used to grease and or swab the bore . Rammer is used to set the load just like a ram rod would be .
These are hanging from belts because out west the mountain howitzers were most often taken apart and carried on pack mules then set back up when they were deployed . So no chains would be on the carriage. Or large implement hooks for the rammers
However the customer wanted the chains that would be on a towed piece ..
One a towed piece the cannon would be hooked to an Limber . “ think small two wheel ammunition cart “ that cart would then be hooked to a team of horses . Thus the chains are the stay chains that are hooked to the limber when towed .

Yes the friction fuse is set off by a lanyard . The owner was to have those ordered . But they had not came in last weekend so we fired with a timed fuse

I did not make the wheels , they are original wheels from a prairie carriage. We purchased the wheels and barrel . I made the rest of the Iron work and the main carriage an axel

The covered cylinder on the right side is what we use for whats called a tampon . IE it plugs the bore so nothing gets into the bore either while towed , displayed or stored . An original would have been made from wood . In this case we had to make a last minute one from foam and wrap it with tape so that we could transport the cannon .
People and police don’t like it much when they follow you and the bore is aimed at their front windshield. Its rather odd thing to see . First they are like COOOLLL look at that . Then they start to slow down or pass LMAO so we made a tampon for it
However it doesn’t exist anymore as we also used it as a wad for firing blank rounds LMAO

Thanks for the artillery info Captchee!

Is the bore diameter such that he can use something premade for a ball and wad, or will those need to be cut and cast? What will he use? Any legal hoops to jump through for a piece that size?

You said you used about 4 pounds to test it. About how much powder would be used for each expected load?

Hope I haven't asked too many questions, guess I should web search to see if there are answers.

With guns such as those, Sibley wanted to capture Fort Union. If he had anticipated placing those guns on the bluff that overlooked Fort Union, his shells would not reach it as the Union made a star fort a bit further away after Sibley resigned and went to Virginia.

Nearby Raton has a bronze 12 pdr sitting on a pedestal. I wish the town would sell it to me to raise $$$$. I'll give them $200 for it as scrap metal. I'll give them $2k for the M-42 Duster. Art told me that they took the regulator out of their M-42 and that sucker would do 65 mph.

The bore is 4.69 inchs
He will cast his own balls
We fired the first round with 1 Lb all other shots were with ½ and 1/4lb charges .
Standard load for this piece was one lb the breech is turned for 1lb so when loading a smaller charge you have to make up the difference. We been using flour for that .
As I mention the 1841 had a improved breech design so rolled cartridges are made .
For live fire a sabot would have originally been used on the back of the sabot the charge would be tied . On the front the ball is strapped to the sabot or a large bagged shot charge .
The 1841 isn’t a long range piece . Effective range is alittle over a mile . Mostly from what I have read , these were used for close in work either on troops or targets .
No fedrial regulations tell you get to playing with Rifled bores
2k wouldnt even scratch the cost of a barrel GARY lol . The barrel on this piece was just under 8000.00
