question on reloading .40 s&w

hey guys my family and I and got into shooting pistols and due to the cost of .40 i was thinking about reloading myself and just for a hobby.

before i attempt it I will read up and make sure i do everything correctly.

well im fine with the calculations my question is where can i get 1000 rd of jhp for 60 bucks? i know fmj is that cheap but the cheapest jhp i found was 25 for 100

there are probably less expensive places but I was quickly able to find that bass proshop has a box of 100 Hornady XTP JHP for $23/100.

I go there or a local gun shop (Carter Country) here in Houston only because I like going and picking up components the day I want them. I'm impatient when it comes to shipping LOL!

Also, make sure you are looking for .40cal/10mm. They are the same bullet and many brands have them listed just as 10mm. This threw me for a loop when I started reloading the .40S&W.

Make sure you look up fixes for "Glocked up" brass. If you pick brass at a range that was fired thru a glock, it will likely have a buldge in it where some glock .40cal chambers aren't fully supported. Buy a Lee Buldge buster kit to help fix this. I run my .40cal brass thru this and then go thru normal reloading procedure. Have two .40cal glocks so all my brass potentially has this issue.

Ask the range management if Plated bullets are permitted. There are a number of factory loads (UMC) using plated bullets so it's not like it would be unheard of. If so that opens a few more options. (Berry's & Rainier, among others...)

If my range only allowed JHP I would find a new range. Are you sure they do not allow plated bullets? Usually ranges want to reduce airborne lead and plated will do that.

ok well nvm, i just called and they allow fmj, they dont allow rifle fmj so i was told wrong... in that case it should be quite a bit cheaper..

can someone lead me in the right direction for some reading or videos on what proper techniques and the equipment i would need?

i can get brass locally for very cheap...

with this setup it comes to under 10 for a box of 50, is that reasonable?

once again before i order or touch anything i will read several books i just want to get an idea of cost savings before i choose to start or not. thanks

Couple of notes. You may want to check local gun stores for powder and primer if you are looking to start with 1 pound of powder or 1000 primers. The Hazmat shipping charges (generally $25 or more) will eat your lunch for a small order of either. If you can order a larger quanity, you may want to check Powder Valley, Inc.

While I use W231, Power Pistol and Unique for my 40S&W, I will mention that you may also consider Power Pistol or Unique which will fill more of the cartridge case. The larger amount of these two powders will overfill a case if you accidently double charge. Powder pouring onto your bench quickly lets you know there's a problem. I've found that Unique doesn't meter as well as Power Pistol and W231 through my meter.

thanks ya i had planned to get the powder and charges locally but i mainly wanted to make sure my prices were correct and keep the price below 10 per 50 without using lead rounds

they dont allow fmj rifle rounds, but i was told it applied to pistol which I cleared up
