.38 Spl 158gn plated bullets
Does anyone have load data for HP38 and 158gn plated WC ie Berrys for target shooting? I can find load data with HP38 for 158 LSWC and for Hornady XTP, but not plated 158gn for some reason. Thanks...

Berry's FAQ: How do I load Berry's lead plated bullets?
Edit: Actually, there is one manual that does include load data for plated bullets, Lee's Modern Reloading, 2nd Ed., but it only includes data for Accurate and Vihtavuori powders with plated bullets. Last edited by Distortion; September 23, 2010 at 12:38 AM. |

Most of the recommendations are that the same loads should be used as for lead of the same weight. Other recommendations are that the lightest loads for fmj of the same weight may be ok for plated.
I personally use 3.5 gr Bullseye for 158 gr plated. I also have had very good results with Xtreme plated bullets. http://www.xtremebullets.com/ They have seemed to me to be cheaper also, and price includes shipping. willr |

I use 4 grains of HP38 for the Rainier 158 flat nose with good results.

I use 4.2 grains W231 and a OAL of 1.580 for 158g. FN Ranier that works very good. For plated bullets I normally use the lower end FMJ recipes and have always had good success with them. This gives you a wide range of options.

I use the x-treme bullets 158gr. for my 38/357 3.0gr bullseye for the special, and I am not absolutely posotive for the .357,and 115gr with 4.5gr bullseye for my 9mm. Shoots nice and clean.

With .38 special velocities it doesn't matter if you use data for lead or jacketed. It only starts to matter once you get to around 1000 fps or so--and then only because at the higher speeds the plating starts to come off.
