.45 colt handload safety check

I have a S&W 25-13 Mountain Gun. I would like to load my favorite bullet, a cast 265 gr hp over 15.4 gr of 2400. Is this a safe load in my MG (which is rated for around 25000psi) in small quantities for hunting

thanks
Jason

1400, or did you mean 2400?

I'm not sure what 1400 is, although I could have missed something somehwhere.

My library of manuals was little help, I think you may be able to find a better powder on your shelf for this bullet/weapon combo, probably something a bit slower. If you want to try it I'd back off a fair bit, sounds a bit stiff for this lightweight but well made gun.

Alliant shows a max load of 15.4gr 2400 under a 250gr SWC, OAL of 1.6". How that bullet compares to yours, I do not know, but it doesn't sound like it would be ridiculous.

Starting low and working up would be the conventional wisdom, unless 2400 is one of those powders that requires essentially max loads only.

I think your load should be safe.I just looked in an old Handloader # 217 for a similar load and found a 260 gr. cast with 18.5 gr. 2400 at about 23,000psi. The same bullet with 17gr. is in the 16-19k psi range. I would probably suggest 16.5 gr. as it has been an accurate load with 270 gr swc for me.
