Got a Squib today - what to do.

I was shooting 38 special in my 1976 Ruger New Model Blackhawk 7" bbl. POP! No recoil. Took the cylinder out and there was the bullet 1/8" inch in.

What to do????

First thing I did was blame my press.
Second thing I did was put the gun away until I got home so the press wouldn't be any more embarrassed that it already was.
Then I cut a short piece of wooden dowel with a diameter just smaller than the caliber my press loaded without dispensing powder into the casing and tapped the bullet back out very gently.
I now have a small dowel and small hammer in my gun bag. Since adding these items to the bag, my press has never repeated this.

I carry a couple lengths of 1/4" brass rod in my range bag. Never had to use it on my own but a friend needed the help one day. I always carry a small ball peen hammer in my range bag as well.

The brass is really a better idea. Wood has been known to splinter and wedge in around the bullet. Not cool and harder to remove than just a bullet.

If you want to ease the process a little, put the gun muzzle-down on the bench and put Kroil in behind it and let it soak a day first.

It happrens.

As mentioned, wood dowl, (largest that will fid down the barrel) and a plastic or wood mallet.

Kind of as if you were slugging the barrel.

You dont want to know how I do rifles when dowls dont work.

squib load

Do as the others have mentioned and if you have any more of that batch left, weigh them to be sure you don't have more that didn't get charged.

was it a reload?
I had some issues with wadcutters in 38 spl back in 1975. I wasn't cleaning the wax off the lead enough, it was deteriorating the hercules unique powder, I could see the rounds going down range, like a rock from a slingshot.

For 45ACP I use a piece of Shotgun cleaning rod. I beveled off the edges just in case. I have used it on my 1911 and several others.

One other thing I have done and would never suggest you do it. I had a 22-250 bullet just seated inside the bore. I loaded up a case with a light load. Chambered the case with the barrel vertical, brought it down near level and touched it off. Bullet went bye-bye. Do NOT do this if the bullet is further down the bore. Results could be much different that what you might expect.
