Is this too hot for a Uberti 45?

I just loaded up some ammo for a Uberti 45 with 250 gr lead bullets, with 7.5, 8, and 8.5 gr of Unique for accuracy testing. Speer loading book lists 7.5 as starting, and 8.5 as maximum. Should the Uberti be strong enough to handle the 8.5 gr loads? I did not think it should be a problem, but a buddy told me he thought the 8.5 might stress the gun. Any thoughts?

any load over 850 fps with 250 grain bullet I would consider getting too hot. 850 fps is the standard velocity of factory 45 Colt ammo

Thank you, Sir. I'll see if I can find velocity listings.

You should be ok with those loads, they approximate the original Colt .45 loadings. Do not go any higher, the maximums listed are there for a reason.

Where did you find the Unique? It seems to be in short supply everywhere.
I wound up using Universal Clays in my Ruger .45 Colt.

No, 9.0gr is a staple load amongst SAA shooters and closely duplicates original ballistics. The guns are more than strong enough.

Since that is a Colt replica, you have to stick to Colt revolver loads. Hornady lists 7.0 gr of Unique as max with a 255 gr lead bullet yielding 850 fps. Speer shows 8.5 gr of Unique with a 250 gr lead bullet yielding 898 fps. Lyman lists 9.0 gr of Unique with a 250 gr cast lead bullet, yielding 875 fps, but they used a Ruger Blackhawk. They do seem a bit on the warm side. It may not frag the gun, but it will batter it for sure.

I had the Unique stored from years ago, I was lucky I bought a big can of it! I just found Alliant's web site which lists the 230 gr cast behind 8.5 gr of Unique at 850 fps, so I'm sure I will be below this with the 250 gr. Problem now is finding CCI large primers, as I'm on my last pack of 100!

Yes, velocity will probably be lower, but pressure will be higher.
