Col 45 acp

I have loaded 50 rounds of .45 ACP using 185 grain Hornady Hollow points over 5.7 grains of Bullseye with a COL averaging 1.206” which is the receipt I got out of the Speer #14 reloading manual (the manual stated a COL of 1.2” for Speer Gold Dot HP 185 grain).

Unfortunately I thought I could substitute the Hornady Hollow points over the Gold Dot’s. After my mistake, I e-mailed Hornady to get the COL for there bullets and the Rep gave me a COL of 1.230”.

The question is; should I take the 50 rounds apart I put together and start over, or are these safe to shoot. I e-mailed Hornady this morning (should hear something back soon), but wanted to get your feedback as well.

Speer gives a max load of 6.4 on the Bullseye so I'd say your safe.

Age old Sierra...

My 50th Anniversary Sierra says it'll be warm, but you're OK.

Be an interesting load, can't say that my autos shoot heavy loads well, but my wheel guns just love 'em!

God bless and good shooting.

Margiesex

And remember: Hug your God and your guns - 'cause he's coming for them both, and soon!

Load up a clip "cycle" the rounds. If they don't hang up you should be fine.
Some of my first rounds were a little "deep" but I corrected. At the time
I had no way of pulling them....so I shot them....I only type with two
fingers any way...

My guess is Hornady is going to send you back lawyereese in the form of "DONT SHOOT THEM!".
I agree with margiesex (some name) it will be a little hot but you should be alright, I would shoot one and take a very good look at the case, if the primer shows a lot of pressure then I would listen to the lawyereese.

You could use your impact hammer (if you have one) and bring the head out a little bit and re-seat the bullets to the correct OAL. A couple of light taps should do the job unless you crimped the case.

When changing pistol bullets (mfg or type) from a tested load, I usually measure the two bullets for length. Example - 9mm Remington 124 gr JHP to Winchester 124 gr FMJ, I will take the difference and adjust the OAL.

Rem JHP = 0.566
Win FMJ = 0.586

Diffence = 0.020

Old OAL = 1.120 New OAL = 1.140

You want to make sure that the base of the bullet seats to the same place in the case, that way with the same powder load and case space and bullet weight your pressure should be the same.

You want the volume of space within the case to be the same. As always it is best to test the new load on one or two rounds before loading up a 100 or more.

Stay safe
Jim

The round cycles through the chamber without a problem. Took the gun apart and placed the round in the barrel and took note of its depth, same as a factory HP.

Finally got a response back from Hornady see below; simple and to the point!

I only have the Speer reloading manual and am surprised that the starting load of 5.7 grains is so high comparatively to other reloading manuals. (based on what I am reading here)

Will take your advice and check the first round primer and brass before going through the rest of the lot. I was hesitant about taking them all apart, since I have no bullet puller and I did crimp all 50.

Let you know how they shoot.
