Question: G3/91 brass

I'm thinking about buying an HK 91 type rifle (likely a newer PTR but maybe a SAR-8 or FMP model or something similar). I heard a rumor that the HK 91 chews up brass so you can't reload it. Is this true? If so is it true for every 91 clone or only certain ones? (and if so whcih ones). Thanks.

Put a port buffer on the rifle and deal with it.

Unless the case mouth is smashed flat, you can reload PTR91 brass.

The only 308 brass I have is what I was able to pick up or trade for, and a number of them were shot in one of those fluted chamber rifles (CETME?). When I was using Hornady One Shot for case lube I had to give up on those, because the force involved seemed to always cause the case to stick in the sizing die.

However, I've since discovered Redding Imperial Sizing wax, and generally I can resize even these cases that were shot in the fluted chambers. I don't know if the wax is just slicker than other lubes or what, but there's been hardly anything I couldn't resize once I switched to the Redding wax. I would try your slickest case lube and give it a try, you might be able to resize those flute cases. They still show a little evidence of the fluting by look and feel when I'm done, but they seem to shoot ok.

Sizing lubes vary a lot. The spray on lubes are barely better than PAM cooking spray. The lubricant film they put down is thin.

Lee lube, hornady wax lube, just a step above the spray lubes. But not much better.

I believe these horrible lubes are the reason small base sizing has such a bad reputation. I have almost bent press levers trying to small base 308 brass coated with these horrible lubes.

But there are solutions:

Imperial sizing wax is very slippery. It is great stuff, though you are supposed put it on with your fingers.

I use RCBS water soluble. Easy to apply, washes off in hot water.

As for the flutes. The old flutes will blow out on the next firing, and new flutes will be created .

Deal with it.

While most of the flute marks from HK-style chambers are powder residue, heavy loads can cause brass to actually flow into the flute areas and create raised flute marks. These cases I throw away.
