making a multi caliber gun ?

ihave a older new england 12ga single shot and was wondering the effects on making like a adapter's to shoot about any ammo i wanted to . say a 50cal single shot ? sound like fun . i know it would not be accurate but fun to shoot . is this possible or safe ?

Not real smart. I dont know that you could get a 50 cal to chamber in a 12 ga (havent tried it) but I do know the 50 developes more pressure then a normal shotgun can take.

Why not just shoot the proper ammo you're gun is designed for.

Hell no. No no no no.

Even if you somehow mounted .50 bmg barrel on it, the action would not be able to handle it.

Maybe a .500 whisper or .500 S&W mag? But for gods sake, at least put a proper barrel on it. Otherwise you'd destroy the gun and possibly lose some fingers first shot.

You can get NEW New England single shots in a wide range of calibers, including .500 S&W MagNUMB.
But they will not fit and do not recommend adding a rifle barrel to an older shotgun receiver. Supposedly the current stuff is beefed up to handle rifle pressures.

well the gun is only about 10yrs old and its cheap but yea i was wondering about the 50 cal , big friggin bullet !

cool deal i just found the dina site and purchased a adapter for a 9mm since the 9's are cheap ammo . the 45 long colts are pricey

You can order new barrels in what ever cal. you want. That would be the best bet.

I love the NEF H&R single shots. Have a few. Before you go and ruin a gun or hurt yourself, you should read up on the gun. There a couple types of receivers. The shotgun receivers are not as strong as their rifle receivers. The firing pins and pin holes are different. They do have barrels of many calibers that you can swap.

I would suggest you goggle and get informed before you get hurt. 9mm probably would be no big deal, BUT do the research. Graybeard outdoors website has a big section just for the handi's. They have all the information a person could ever want on the NEF H&R, even have a classified section.

Although if you have the H&R SB2(high pressure) receiver with a 12 Gage barrel(shorten to legal limit). If you then buy an adapter for it for a pistol caliber, that would be interesting to play with.

Be Careful what ever you decide.

You will need to buy an NEF rifle first ...... then the company will fit other appropriate barrels to that gun .....

Your shotgun is exactly what it must remain ..... never a rifle .......

...... as others have pointed out ..... any NEF shotgun is to remain a shotgun.

To put it bluntly, boatmonkey82, you're endangering yourself, and anyone standing near you, when you touch off a metallic cartridge round with it's attendent higher pressures in a SB-1 shotgun receiver, period.

Please don't.

The older shotgun receivers may look the same, but they are cast IRON, not heat-treated steel, like the later SB-2/rifle receivers, and were designed for shotshells generating 12,000 psi - not cartridges generating 2x and 3x higher.

H&R made a combo.I had one 20 ga barrel and a 30/30 barrel.I still have the 20 barrel as the rest got stolen.stevens/savage made the same rig and they make the model 24 over under,22/410 or 223/12ga.

if i had a old junk 16 ga i would not think twice about mounting it to a tree and loading a 50cal in it with a long long long string tied to it while standing behind a even larger tree. us poor boys cant afford them fancy 50 cals lol . i remmeber my dads old kit gun he put together when he was young , looks like a pirate pistol , but it is a black powder 50 and when i got older we got up the balls to shoot it , lol we bear hugged a tree with the gun on the other side for the first shot , after we figured it was safe we had some fun with it .
