1911 Thumb safety question
I have a Taurus 1911 and would like to put on a new thumb safety. I'm looking for something really nonobtrusive (the opposite of the extended super ninja ambidextrious safety that's on there). I'm looking for something along the lines of the original non-A1 safety and what Colt is putting on the New Agent. You know, something more friendly to the love handles...
Anyone know where I could get one? |

Brownells has quite a selection, including the Gunsite lowered safety that I prefer. But if you want one of the original small GI thumb safeties, try e-gunparts (Numrich).

do you have a good file?
Take your safety off and file away at it until it is configured to your wishes.
Go slow, be patient, chanting "I can always take more off". (Wonder why Brownells offers nothing appicable....) |

As usual, my tastes seem to be the exact opposite of what everyone else is looking for. Ambi, extended, tactical... man, everyone makes that. Short and stubby ain't in fashion.

As I responded in post #2, Numrich will have the original (stubby) GI safety. As an afterthought, so will Springfield Armory, since they make an A1 clone.

tackdriver,
You'll still have to fit the safety to your gun. |

I've decided to check with Colt and Springfield. If I can't get what I'm looking for there, then I'm going to order a "tactical" safety from Ed Brown or Wilson and grind one into the shape I like. I'm also aware about the fitting process. I will likely be letting a smith handle that, although I realize most people consider it to be a simple job. I'm just not patient. |

There are several listed on GB - http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Sea...CountryCode=++
They're described as 'old style', some of these are apparently NOS. Otherwise I'd try Colt or SA. |

The old style original 1911 thumb safety is the best in my opinion, especially on a carry gun.
I fabricated the one on this Custom Springfield. Regards Bob Hunter www.huntercustoms.com ![]() |

Agree with Bob on profile size for carry. My hands just fit the lowered position better, though, and the paddle can be reshaped to have a lower profile, as mentioned earlier. As long as you don't take the tip back too far, the leverage is still functional.
Tackdriver, Numrich has the Series '70 and '80 Colt parts. These will be the later standard shape style, and not the old style, as Bob shows. You might PM Bob and ask his going rate doing that kind of work? I don't know what year that style changed, but perhaps some gun historian will chime in with that information? The Numrich part numbers are attached. The asterisk next to the checkered version means it is out of stock in this instance.
