What's the deal with Remington bullets!?

I opened up my newly-purchased bag of .429 dia 180gr Remington JHP bullets only to discover that they're not the classic 'scallop' pattern JHP as their factory bullets! William Thomas Foxtrot!?

I specifically bought these Remingtons because i wanted to experiment with different defensive loads for my Taurus snubby using them...They look exactly like Federal's 180gr and 240gr JHP.

A phone call to Natchez where i bought them confirms that Remington reloading components differ slightly from factory.

Can anyone else verify this for me? I wanted the scalloped-pattern JHP bullets.

Another reason is specific loads require specific bullets for certain cartridge combinations in loading manuals - except Lee

I can post comparison pics if you don't know what i'm talking about.

Anyone else roll their own with Remington or Federal .429 JHP bullets?

Why buy Remingtons anyway?
The QC sucks lately across the board there.
I actually think the QC dept. has been fired long ago, and just sits empty now.
It's a waste of money to keep feeding that sloth.

This probably won't help much, but I've never gathered that Remington is really a component bullet company. Seems to me that most of the Remington bullets I've found for sale are likely overruns or bulk supplies that need to be thinned, and they are often priced as such.

Compared to most other offerings, they are typically cheaper. Compared to the real bulletsmtihs like Hornady, Barnes, Nosler, Remington bullets are just another cheap alternative.

The main reason i bought these bullets was their price, and to work up some defensive loads for my Taurus 445 snubby.

Remington reloading components generally are very good. Their .44 Mag/.44 Special brass is excellent.

anyone else use Remington components?

Sounds like you were wanting the Golden Sabers but bought standard JHPs instead.

Nope
Golden Sabers aren't made in .429, and i do not see the 275gr Core-Lokt available as a reloading component.

here's a visual aid:

Remington SJHP vs JHP's

For reasons only known to them, Remington makes both a JHP and an SJHP. The same holds true for soft points. If you don't specify, you'll wind up with the JHP/JSP's.

I've got a box of 500 of the 200 grain .44s, and they are scalloped. Of course I bought them 10 or more years ago as a stopgap for the 240s I was using at the time. I haven't looked at any new production bullets lately.

I've never seen .429 dia Remington 200gr JHP bullets - are you sure they're not 180 grain?

I'll bet the farm they're 210gr!

Want to sell 50-100 of 'em? They would be perfect for my .44 snubby

Yeah, they are 210s. I don't want to open the box of 500, sorry. I DO have 300 Nosler 200s I'd let go. PM me.

I've generally been pleased with Remington 9mm FMJ, and 150 grain 308. PSP. Both were more consistently sized than comparable Winchester. OALs of finished cartridges varied more with the Wins.

Most JHP .44 Special ammuniton won't reliably expand AND penetrate deep enough for SD and CCW.

Get a Glock 19 or G23. They're smaller, lighter, more powerful, higher capacity, easier to conceal, faster follow-up shots...

R&D improvements in autoloading ammunition has far surpassed old-school .44 revolver ammo, terminally-speaking

I have used the 180 JHP Remington (without scallops) and the accuracy results were excellent in a Smith 29 Classic I used to own and pretty good in my current 629 Classic. Also shot these bullets in a friend's 44 Mag Super Blackhawk with great results. Liked them so much I eventually ordered a 500 round bulk box.

I tried some out from my Ruger 44/77 stainless using 23 grains of 2400 powder in .44 mag and got excellent accuracy and terminal performance. It was leaving craters 12"-18" wide in the side of a muddy creek bed!

I want to get my hands on some of the scalloped bullets.. I'm gonna email Remington to find out what the deal is.

I'm surprised more people on here don't reload with these inexpensive bullets - i guess more for me!

ETA - i'll pass on the Nosler's, crowbeaner. Thanks for the offer

hi rampant colt, the factory uses the SJHP for the scalloped round and JHP for the std hollow point. Rem does one run or so a year and sells out very soon.
I have been looking for the same bullet in 41 mag.
the .429 44 mag 210 rem number i think is RB44MG6 210 SJHP
good luck on your search.

Product Information
Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point bullets feature a unique scalloped jacket design that is engineered to combine optimum expansion with controlled penetration for maximum energy transfer. This is not loaded ammunition.
$110 shipped for 500 isn't bad..
I'm paying around the same for Rainier and Berry's 240gr plated hollowpoints shipped

I didn't respond to your post before because to me JHP and SJHP are the same thing. Evidently Remington's definition is different
thanks, DW

y'all have been a HUGE help in locating those bullets

I use many Remington components

I highly recommend numerous R-P goodies, and I endorse their superior 180g .357" S-JHP bullet.

But I don't go to 180g in the .429" bores.....
