300 H&H Bullets

This new to me Remington 700 Classic is really growing on me, and could end up as my primary big game (plains game in Africa) rifle. It is not really a 300 Win Mag competitor, more a 30-06 on steroids. So far, my best groups are with Hornady ELD-X 178 gr and good old Speer Hot-Cor 200 gr flat base. My old standby SGK 180s are close. Best groups are just inside an inch at 100. The 180s are running 2,950 with Std<10. The 200s are at 2,800, Std in the teens.

I am about to work up some Nosler Accubond and Woodleigh Weldcore 180s, which I expect to compete well. Any experience you can share on these would be appreciated. I have yet to work up Berger VLD Hunting 168 gr. (#30510) and Hornady's ELD-X 212, and I really don't know what to expect with them. Any advice?

Can't speak to those specific bullets from personal experience, sorry.

Generally speaking with top loads, using the same weight bullets the .300H&H will give about 100fps more than the 06, the .300 Win about that much more than the H&H and the .300 Weatherby about that much more than the .300Win.

Numbers approximate, different loads in different rifles can be above or below the average and that is completely normal and should be expected.

Let's broaden the question. What experience do you have with 0.308 Berger VLD Hunting and Hornady ELD-X bullets?

I've used both of those in 308 and 30-06, the ELD's in a 300 WSM. The Bergers can be accurate, but I've read too many mixed reviews about how they perform on game.

The ELD-X bullets were more accurate for me, and reports are that they expand reliably on game. A lot of guys have been concerned that they may over expand, but as long as you stay heavy for caliber you still should get good penetration.

The good news is that they only offer heavy for caliber. 178 gr is the lightest 30 caliber they offer. I had good luck with 200 gr ELD-X from a 300 WSM. Performance is virtually the same as 300 H&H.

I've been happy with Accubonds too. And don't discount the Ballistic Tips. They got a reputation for over expanding years ago, but Nosler made the jackets thicker a few years ago and they work better now. Especially if you go with the heavier 180-200 gr bullets. They tend to be cheaper and more accurate than Accubonds and with the thicker jackets perform about the same.
