The .223 is a nice cartridge for women, children, and people who have never shot and are terrified of recoil...

Nonsense like this is exactly why you can't believe everything you read on the interwebz.
In this case, its not nonsense.

It may be an opinion that you disagree with, but its not nonsense.

Outside of military applications, and derivatives, the .223 Rem IS a varmint cartridge. It's legal for deer in only a handful of states. It IS a good cartridge for people of smaller stature and those with little or no experience shooting, due to its low recoil.

So it you're planning to shoot at gophers, it's great. If you're planning to shoot at anything over about 100 lbs, it's not so great.
While a bit of an overstatement, this is essentially true. For sport shooting. "Not so great" means that there are things that are better. And, frankly, there are things that are better for larger game.

All cartridges and loadings have inherent compromises. It's up to the user to research and understand benefits and limitations.
Also true.

How useful, effective, and efficient a round is depends on what you use it for.

I think you mean to say that it's illegal for deer in only a handful of states.

The .223 might be a vermint round but the 5.56 is military no? From my reading the snipers in Iraq did extremely well at close range engagements with the standard 20 inch upper. They made note that the terminal ballistics were better on the heavier bullets and they upgraded to match triggers with I assume trijicons. I found the book Trigger Men to be a interesting read even though it was a bit repetitive.
