An exception would be the 581, 681, 586 and 686 no dash and -1 L frames. The ones that had the firing pin bushing recall completed were also stamped with a "M" (for modified) above or after the model number. Jim |

Hello, going through my late grandfather's belongings, I've found what I believe is a S&W Frontier Model double action revolver. The barrel engraving reads "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS. U.S.A. PAT'D JAN. 17. & 24. 65. JULY 11. 65. AUG. 24. 69. JULY 25. 71. DEC. 2.79. MAY 11&25. 1880"
It's a 5-shot cylinder and appears to be .32 caliber The Serial number is just 5 digits 953XX Is there any way to get more info on this? Thanks in advance for any help! |

Frontiers are .44 Caliber
Sounds like you have a .32 Double Action. The serial number is for a Fourth Model made from 1883-1909 but the last patent date of 1880 is for a Second Model. Barrels are interchangeable. Yours made before 1899 therefore a FFL Antique. |

Serial numbers ran from C622700 in 1963 to C810532 in 1965. So, yours would likely be 1964.

Thank you Jim ,I thought I had either had the 642 on or close to me since sometime in 1996 . I started carrying j frames as back up or off-duty guns in 1989 and have had the 642 the longest and carried it the most of any other j frame and continue to in retirement .
