270 win reduced recoil loads?

Does anyone have some recipes for mid velocity loads?

I am taking my son hunting hogs in FL Saturday, and I want to load up some 100gr softpoints, But the only info my loadbooks have is for max velocity.

I fear that inadvertantly going too low could cause higher pressures to develop.

my reduced load is 18 grains of Unique with a 130 grain Nosler Ballistic tip. it does 1,850 fps out of a Ruger # 1A with a 22 inch barrel. it will shoot into an inch at 100 yards. for a tougher bullet you could use the 130 grain Nosler Partition with out any problems. it is a really mild load to shoot

Well, he's a little guy and I want to use the 100gr bullets tht I have on hand and am looking for a load that will duplicate 243 ballistics.

Preferably using h4831...ha ha.

I know I'm being picky, but I'm pretty sure one of you can help me out here.

steveno, how much unique do you use in your full power loads?

I only use Unique for the reduced load. Unique is too fast a burning powder for a heavy hunting load. for a hunting load I use the 160 grain Nosler Partition and 56 grains of H-4831sc. this is good for about 2,820 fps out of the 22 inch barrel and groupd less than an inch at 100 yards.

I compared imr 4895 loads with 100 gr bullets, and I think that a 40 gr charge is about what I am looking for

It lists a starting load of 43 gr for about 2950 fps...which is close to what the factory 100 gr loads in the 243 are with the same bullet weight.

My son is 7, but he shoots my dad's youth model 243 frighteningly well with 100gr =factory loads.

Dad is in NY and I am in GA, so I can't get the gun by SAT.

But I can get to Bass Pro and buy some powder tonight.

Hodgdon has the reduced loads for kids listed on their site. H4759 is the powder.

I've always used 2400 for reduced loads, but no reason Unique wouldn't do just fine.

"20 grains of 2400" will work in anything from .30-30 to .30-06, with any old bullet you want. Lead, jacketed, light or heavy...I've tried them all; .30-30, .30-40, .308, etc.

I've used this with a 169-grain lead gas-check in the '06. And, with "stray" jacketed bullets lying around the loading bench. The book says around 1,800 ft/sec or so for the gas check. No recoil to amount to a hill of beans.

Some such load in a .270 with the 100-grain oughta give around 2,200 ft/sec, just guessing.

Heck, load three rounds with 25 grains and the 130-grain bullet and try oit out. Best way...

Well I loaded 100 gr speer SP in front of 40gr imr4895.

it seemed to kick about as hard as an ar-15 and hit where I was aiming at 50 yards.

So I fired a round at the 300 yard gong. I aimed a foot high. I hit about 6 inches high!

I was really supprised at how little drop there was in this underpowered load!

I will have to shoot this on paper to see if it is accurate and consistent, but it seems to have potential.

A .270 load I have used is 24 gr SR 4759 behind 150 gr Speer (what I had the most of). Point of impact is 8" below my usuial hunting load. This load originated from a Speer manual. Groups around an inch.
