AA 4064
I normally use IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 in my Garand but managed to land some AA 4064. AA 4064 and IMR 4064 are not the same powder. Has anyone loaded for a Garand using this powder? I searched and did not come up with much published data specifically for use in the Garand.

Several folks on the CMP forum have used it and found it works well. Its name comes from being similar in application to the IMR product.
Going over the Hodgdon data, you see examples where both powders seem to edge each other out, or one seems to be needing more powder and the other less, and then with a different bullet, that reverses. Either way, though, to get to M2 Ball and M72 Match load levels takes less than the maximum charge of either. My approach to copying M2 Ball ballistics would be to take a 150-grain bullet and work up from 46.5 grains to 49.5 grains looking for an accuracy spot. For copying M72, I would use the 175-grain Sierra MatchKing and start at about 45.5 grains and work up to 48.5 grains looking for an accuracy spot.

I have about a pound left out of 8 of AA4064. A bunch has been used in my M1. Works great. I use mostly 155 and 168 bullets. As I recall 46-47 gr. works well for both.

Note: For some reason I typoed "250" instead of the intended '150' in that last post. It is corrected now.

Should be fine its cut a bit smaller than IMR 4064 so you may get a little bit less case fill its just tad a slower than IMR4064 the burnrate chart Im reading has the IMR4064 listed at 101 and AA4064 listed at 103.
Follow unclenicks advice but I bet money some where around 47 grains probably give you best accuracy . Were you shooting 150s? 168s or 175s |

Ran an 8 round clip test load.
Powder AA 4064 47.0 gr. Bullet Hornady 150 gr, FMJBT Ave velocity 2571 fps ES 171 SD 55 1.5" group at 50 yds. (knees just can't take 100 yard walks today) Small sample. Maybe increasing the load will help with the stats. Functioning was perfect. |

olduser,
I had to up the charge on those to get any decent accuracy, what COL are you using? I think Horandy recommends .3185ish, for those. 1.5 inches isnt bad for those. |

I'd be okay with a 1.5" group at 50 with iron sights.

I still have a couple hundred of those , you got me wanting to load some up, I actually never crimped that bullet, But be interesting to load a batch with a light crimp and see how they do.

AA4064 is what my dad used in his 30-06. He used Speer or Hornady 150 & 165 gn bullets.
It’s a tang safety model Ruger 77 and I believe his loading was about 50 grains of this powder. He also used either Remington or Winchester primers in these loads. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
